Spanish 8 Reales - Milled and Pillar Dollar - Piece of Eight

Lot # 204 (Sale Order: 204 of 361)

Offered is a Spanish 8 reales that was minted from 1732-1826. These coins are round made of silver and feature the Pillars of Hercules surrounding crowned, conjoined globes and ocean waves below, hence the other name for this coin, "Pillar Dollar". Many countries in both European and Asian used these coins. In the United States these coins were legal tender up until the Civil War period. Milled Dollars had a powerful effect on the U.S. coinage system. Our silver dollar was based on the Spanish Milled Dollar and some of the slang expressions referring to this money still survive today. As an example, the 8 Reales were often cut into 8 "bits" to make change. Each bit was worth 12 1/2 cents (100 divided by 8). Though rapidly fading now, the expression 2 bits still refers to a quarter dollar.

Original 1914 Photograph - Mototcyclists Stopping at Multnomah Falls, Oregon

Lot # 222 (Sale Order: 222 of 361)

Here is a great photo, dated 1914, of a group of motorcycle enthusiasts stopping at Multnomah Falls, Oregon for a rest.  We can tell a couple of the motorcycles are Daytons, but anyone familiar with bikes will be able to make out the others.  The license plates are very visible and were issued in Oregon and dated 1914. There is a 4 1/2" crease on the upper right side of the photo but the subject matter is so striking it is not distracting.
This is not a  reprint but an original and one of the nicest we have seen to date.
