It was officially adopted as a United St...moreates military bolt-action rifle on June 19, 1903, and saw service in World War I. It was officially replaced as the standard infantry rifle by the faster-firing semi-automatic eight-round M1 Garand starting in 1936. However, the M1903 remained in service as a standard issue infantry rifle during World War II since the U.S. entered the war without sufficient M1 rifles to arm all troops. It also remained in service as a sniper rifle during World War II, the Korean War, and even in the early stages of the Vietnam War. Standard M1903 production was discontinued in 1942 in favor of the M1903-A3. The most noticeable visual difference in the M1903-A3 was the replacement of the barrel-mounted rear sight with a smaller, simpler aperture rear sight mounted on the rear of the receiver; it was primarily adopted in order to speed familiarization by soldiers already trained on the M1 Garand which had a similar sighting system. Although Springfield Armory was the primary manufacturer of the M1903, WWII saw new production of the Springfield at private manufacturers such as the Remington Arms and Smith-Corona Typewriter companies. Remington began production of the M1903 in September, 1941, at serial number 3,000,000 and delivered the first Model 1903-A3s in December, 1942. The U.S. Sniper Rifle Model 1903-A4 guns were assembled from Remington 1903-A3 rifles selected for their superior accuracy, fitted with pistol-grip stocks, and scoped with Weaver 330C telescopic sights. (Model 1903-A4 rifles will also be found fitted with a semi-pistol grip, the so-called "scant" stock.) No front or rear sights were fitted, the bolt handle was bent to clear the scope, and the magazine had to be loaded with individual rounds because the scope mount did not allow the use of chargers. It was the standard U.S. Army sniper rifle in World War II and remained in use throughout the Korean War. This Remington Model 1903-A4 Sniper was made in 1943 and is marked: Barrel "R.A. 9-43", "R" (Remington) bolt/ handle stamps, as well as other correct "R" marked parts, Stock "RA" Crossed Cannons "FJA" (Remington Arms - Col. Frank J. Atwood) and sports a Weaver Model 330 scope with period correct military pencil etchings. Other features include a green parkerized finish, 24" barrel, Redfield scope mount, walnut stock & handguard, sling rings, bayonet lug and checkered metal buttplate with cleaning kit compartment. This gun comes with the original purchase receipt dated July 7th, 1964, from Red River Army Depot for $14.50. This gun is in nice condition with very light wear, has an excellent sharp/ clean bore and appears to be in good working order.... This gun is from the Robert Orval Hellenthal Estate (1927-2022) - the receipt lists Robert Hellenthal as the purchaser, which makes this a one-owner military surplus rifle.... All proceeds from this Estate Collection have been willed to the Divine Mercy Parish Church.
