Antique Chinese Sedan Chair - Ornately Carved Hand Painted Temple Design Converted to Wine Cabinet
6' 8" x 3' 5" widest points approx, can be converted back.
The family purchased this Wedding Sedan Chair and had it restored and modified so it can be used as a wine cabinet. The wine rack fits inside and can be removed easily. The front pull’s are in the shape of an ancient symbol for “long life”. The serving tray hand carved into a more recent circular symbol for “long life”. The corners are in the style of Chinese duplets (i.e. quotes with meanings behind meanings). In simple terms, it says fine works of beauty are seen from the outside but the true beauty is hidden inside (keep in mind that this sedan chair was used to carry the bride to her wedding in ancient China). The carvings indicate that this wedding sedan is from the Qing dynasty from what we were told.
If you want to own something truly unique and yet functional, now is your chance. $3,800
According to legend, the sedan first appeared in China during the reign of the Yu Emperor in the Xia Dynasty (2100-1600BC). Boasting a long history, the Chinese sedan has survived and developed throughout the dynasties. But for the common people, the most familiar type of sedan is the one used during wedding ceremonies. Finances allowing, the sedan has always been the preferred prop at weddings in the past.
In feudal China, re-married widows could only go to their husbands in the evenings and were generally not seen in sedans. Concubines also rarely enjoyed the privilege of sitting in sedan chairs - even in marriage. The honor of sitting in a sedan was a great source of pride for women.
As a very luxurious vehicle, the sedan was mainly used by the rich in ancient China. Poor people had to rely on donkeys or their feet to travel. It was therefore considered a great privilege to travel in a sedan instead of a horse or noisy donkey. It was only on special occasions, such as weddings, that villagers used sedans to transport the bride to the groom's house. Poles are inserted through the openings on each side and typically 4 or 8 men carried the bride to the wedding ceremony.
This is a unique opportunity for you to own this elegant piece of history!
