French Bisque Automaton "Marquis Smoker" by Leopold Lambert, Character Face 9000/13,000

23" (58 cm.) Posed pridefully upon a velvet covered wooden platform is a bisque-headed man with highly characterized features, oval-shaped face with prominent chin and no...morese, brilliant blue paperweight eyes, nearly-closed mouth arranged in a haughty amused smile, fringed lashes, painted brows, original blonde mohair wig designed as 18th century periwig, cork pate, slender carton torso and legs, bisque forearms with curled fingers. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism and music function well except internal smoking tubes need restoration. Marks: N (script,head) LB (key) (original music tune label on base indicates two songs). Comments: Leopold Lambert, with commissioned bisque head likely by Jumeau, circa 1890; when wound, music plays and he alternately lifts his cigarette holder to his mouth, tilts his head backward as though exhaling, then lifts his lace-edged handkerchief as he turns his head toward it. Value Points: charming lean-bodied gentleman, in original Marquis costume, is especially notable for his unique facial modeling which has not been found on any other automaton or doll.

24" (61 cm.) to top of mirror. Posed in front of her lavishly-fitted dressing table with ormolu-capped richly-draped lace curtains is a bisque-head lady with blue glass e...morenamel eyes, delicately-painted lashes and brows, closed mouth with accent lines, pierced ears, elongated blonde mohair wig in original ringlet curls, bisque shoulderplate, carton torso and legs, wire upper arms, bisque forearms and wearing an original very luxurious silk gown with embroidered flowers, undergarments, and silk shoes. The dressing table is laden with various toiletries and accessories and she holds a powder puff in one hand and a mirror in the other. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism functions well. Marks: (original two-tune label under table). Comments: Vichy, circa 1865. When wound and lever released, the lady lifts her head, turning side to side as though admiring herself, alternately powdering her nose and gazing into the hand mirror, while leaning forward which consequently emphasizes the embroidered detail of her gown; all the while music plays. Value Points: the luxury origin of the very rare automaton is emphasized not only by the intricate and realistic movements and music, but also by the extraordinary details of her costume and coiffure.

Condition: generally excellent. Comments: French, circa 1877, an early mystery portrait bebe, attributed to the premiere bebe creations of Emile Jumeau, and, based upon its size and quality, likely created for the 1878 Paris International Exhibition. Value Points: few portrait bebes of this grand size are known to exist, this example enhanced by superb quality of bisque with luminous complexion, splendid eyes, luxury mohair wig, and wearing very fine early burgundy velvet dress with Belgian lace trim, velvet bonnet, undergarments, stockings and shoes; an additional antique cotton dress, coat and bonnet is included.

Comments: Kammer and Reinhardt, circa 1913, the uniquely modeled urchin, model 124, represents the popular mischievous character Moritz, originally created by the German author Wilhelm Busch in the mid-19th century, and later immortalized for the American market in the comic strip "The Katzenjammer Kids". Value Points: rare model with compelling mischievous expression, well-functioning flirty eyes, original body made for this model only.

Extremely Rare Complete Set of German Animal Skittles by Steiff 12,000/17,000

8" (20 cm.) and 10". Standing upon wooden bases are nine performing animals, each posed with arms outstretched and with tail neatly curled around the edge of the base or ...morepinned to its backside. Each has tiny black shoe button eyes, and original silk neck ribbon or leatherette collar. Included are seven velvet animals, viz. white elephant with tusks, cream piglet with painted brown spots, two dogs with tan or brown spots; cream kitten with tabby markings, terrier dog with brown face mask and back torso, cream bunny with long ears; and a fleecy lamb; along with the kingpin white mohair bear with shoe button eyes and red felt robe and crown with gold and metallic trim. Generally excellent. Germany, Steiff, circa 1900, the velvet skittle animals were available from Steiff as early as 1892, the European complete set comprised these nine animals. Extremely rare to find a complete set especially so well preserved.

Bisque socket head with slender elongated facial shape, painted blue outlined eyes, black upper eyeliner, single-stroke brows, accented nostrils of aquiline ...morenose, closed mouth with very full lips in downcast pensive expression, brunette mohair bobbed wig, composition and wooden ball-jointed body, nice antique costume. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: K*R 107 30. Comments: Kammer and Reinhardt, circa 1910, the model "Karl" from their art character series; the model was actually based on an original sculpture created in 1898 by the Berlin artist, Lewin-Funcke, which he offered to the Kammer and Reinhardt firm for use as a doll's head. (The information was discovered by German researchers Marianne and Jurgen Cieslik and recounted in their book, German Doll Studies). The doll was made in two variations: this wigged example (model 107 "Karl") and a sculpted hair example (model 102 "Walter"). Value Points: finest bisque and sculpting on most expressive-faced doll, original wig, body, body finish, and wearing well-detailed original Tyrolean costume.

Firmly-stuffed seated pup with cream mohair cover having green tinted accents, swivel head, stitched-down ears, large amber brown glass eyes, black embroidere...mored nose tip and mouth, tail, with gilt bell, and having original paper label "Molly Steiff-Original". In good condition, with some mohair thinning. "Molly", the pup, was Steiff's second most long-lived success story, just next to the teddy bear. Introduced in 1926, it remained in their inventory until the 1950s offered in a myriad of colors and sizes. This example, in green color accents, is a very rare example. Germany, Steiff, circa 1930.

French Musical Automaton "Lady at the Spinning Wheel" by Gustav Vichy 12,000/16,000

A lady with paper mache head, brown glass eyes, painted complexion and features, open mouth with row of teeth, brunette hair in up-swept coiffure, carton tor...moreso and legs in seated pose, detachable "flap" bosom, hinged right knee, painted shoes and socks, shaped fingers, silk costume in the romantic 18th century style is seated upon a wooden chair which rests upon a diamond-patterned parquet floor. The lady sits behind an elaborate wooden spinning wheel holding a distaff wrapped with flax and ribbon, her foot rests upon the wooden pedal, and a metal rod attaches the spinning wheel to her torso. When wound, music plays, she turns her head and nods, blinks her eyes, and her bosom heaves up and down as she pumps the pedal of the the spinning wheel, and the spinning wheel turns appearing to spin the flax. Condition: generally excellent, some retouch on face and hands, mechanism and music function well. Comments: Gustav Vichy, circa 1885, the automaton was featured in their catalog as "Fileuse" (Spinner), #457, noted as a deposed model G.V. and described as "paysanne Louis XVI" (peasant of the Louis XVI era). Value Points: rare deposed model, with six movements, two musical tunes, of which no other model is known to exist.

Seated on the top rung of a ladder-back chair is a black-complexioned paper mache boy with most handsome face and strong features, brown glass eyes with mova...moreble lids, hinged lower lip with row of teeth, black wiry hair, carton torso with one hinged hip, wire upper arms, paper mache hands, bare feet, wearing green silk satin jacket over gold shirt, silk striped short pants with peach silk sash and braided tie, straw hat with decorative cluster of berries, holding a wooden banjo in his arms. When wound, he turns his head in a nodding circular motion, opens and closes his mouth as though singing, blinks his eyes, strums the banjo and moves his right leg as though keeping time to the music. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Gustav Vichy, circa 1890, the model appeared in his original catalog as #599, indicated as deposed model. Value Points: rare automaton in perfectly-preserved condition with elaborate and realistic movements, beautiful music box, original costume, and most handsome features.

34" (86 cm.) Standing upon a gilded cane-seat chair is a tall slender woman with paper mache head, blue glass eyes, leather eyelids, painted features, closed mouth with w...moreide beaming smile and row of teeth, brunette mohair wig, carton torso with shapely lady styling, separate shoulderplate with "flap", long slender legs with painted shoes, paper mache lower arms and hands. She is wearing a stylish cream dress, with separate wide collar, straw bonnet, and holds binoculars in her hands. When wound, music plays, and the lady lifts the binoculars to her eyes, pauses, then lowers the binoculars and her eyes blink excitedly while her bosom heaves, as though excited at the race track activity. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Henri Phalibois, circa 1900. Value Points: rare model of popular social scene of the upper classes, of which few other examples are known to exist, with well-functioning mechanism and music.
