North American Arms Co. 1911 Presentation Pistol

Lot # 3378 (Sale Order: 376 of 616)

Extremely Rare North American Arms Co. Model 1911 Presentation Semi-Automatic Pistol

This is an exceptionally fine example of the rare and iconic North American Arms Co. Model 1911 presentation type pistol, that was produced around the end of World War I in 1918 in Quebec, Canada. In early July 1918, the U.S. Government issued a contract for 500,000 Model 1911 pistols to the North American Arms Co., previously the Dominion (Ross) Rifle Plant. The company leased the plant for manufacturing and as part of the contract, the U.S. Government was to supply all of the raw materials necessary for production. However, due to material shortages during the war and the time it took the plant to get tooled up for production, the government was only able to supply enough material to produce approximately 100 sets of initial start-up or prototype parts. Due to the armistice of November 1918, the contract was canceled in December of 1918 with no examples of completed pistols ever being accepted by the U.S. Government. As part of the contract termination settlement, the U.S. Ordnance Board did eventually accept/reclaim a large portion of the manufactured and completed parts and assemblies, most of which were later disposed of. Some however, were later assembled into completed pistols. These pistols are typically seen numbered in 1-100 range, although there are a handful of noted examples with three or four digit serial numbers using the same number such as this one with serial number 444. Page 220 of "U.S. Military Automatic Pistols 1894-1920" by Meadows pictures another example numbered 1111 and also mentions North American Arms Co. guns seen with serial numbers 111 and 222, with the reasoning behind their numbering mentioned as unknown. Rock Island Auction Company previously sold serial number 555. These uniquely serialized pistols were likely presented to both U.S. Army and North American Arms Company officials as gifts. The pistols were stamped with a controlling serial number in two locations, the left lower area of the frame under the grip panel, and the left upper rear corner of the slide, with this example numbered "444". The left side of the slide is stamped "MANUFACTURED BY/NORTH AMERICAN ARMS CO. LIMITED/QUEBEC, CANADA." (double stamped, seen on other examples) and "444" behind the serrations, which is repeated under the left grip on the frame, on the left of the trigger and right of the barrel lug. It is fitted with a serrated slide stop, checkered thumb safety, checkered magazine catch, short grip safety, wide checkered hammer, a smooth straight mainspring housing, checkered diamond pattern grips, and an unmarked, two-tone, pinned based magazine.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Exceptionally fine, retains 70% original blue finish with areas flaking to smooth brown and gray patina with some freckling on the balance, and sharp markings and edges in the metal overall. Grips are excellent with distinct checkering and diamonds, and a few minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent.

Lot # 3379 (Sale Order: 377 of 616)

Desirable Unserialized Production Sample U.S. Colt Model 1911 Semi-Automatic Pistol

With a frame manufactured c. 1918-1919, this U.S. Colt Model 1911 pistol lacks a serial number, proofs, or government acceptance markings, indicating that it is likely a production sample. This example is made up from components that were fairly far along in the manufacturing process, with the slide bearing the two-line, two-block patent dates and address roll-marks surrounding a Rampant Colt logo along with a U.S. property marking on the right side of the frame (both features that were changed to during 1918 production as discussed on pages 150-151 of "U.S. Military Automatic Pistols: 1894-1920" by Meadows). Features fixed oval blade front and square notch rear sights, the aforementioned roll-marks on the left of the slide with a small "H" in the hammer recess and model designation on the right side, a blued barrel marked "S/P" on the left of the recoil lug, the aforementioned U.S. property marking on the right of the frame, a smooth long trigger, short grip safety, flat mainspring housing with a lanyard loop on the bottom, along with checkered slide catch, magazine release, and thumb safety. "A" is stamped on the interior of the slide, along with "H/Q" stamped on top of the frame around the disconnector. Fitted with a pair of 'double diamond' checkered walnut grips and an unmarked two-tone blued magazine.

Class: Curio & Relic Handgun

Very fine as professionally restored, retaining 90% plus blue finish with some limited minor edge wear, some light cycling wear on the barrel, some minor handling marks visible under the finish, some minor freckling/brown discoloration showing on the slide, and minor handling wear. The grips are also very fine with some light compression marks in the otherwise well-defined checkering. Mechanically excellent. Overall a very attractive example of an unserialized U.S. Colt Model 1911 pistol!

Chilean Contract Johnson 1941 Semi-Automatic Rifle in 7mm Mauser

Lot # 3384 (Sale Order: 382 of 616)

Exceptional and Very Scarce Chilean Contract Johnson Automatics Model 1941 Semi-Automatic Rifle in 7mm Mauser

Originally up for consideration by the Netherlands Purchasing Commission as a service weapon for colonial troops in the Dutch East Indies, a large order for the Johnson Rifle was placed in 1940, but the Japanese invasion of the East Indies prevented delivery. These rifles were not able to gain interest for adoption by the U.S. Army, who favored the M1 Garand, but a small amount of them were subsequently used by the U.S.M.C. Marine Raider and Parachute Battalions in the early Makin Island, Guadalcanal, and Tulagi island hopping campaigns in the Pacific. Per Canfield, approximately 21,400 Johnson semi-automatic rifles in total were manufactured, and approximately 750 were procured by the U.S. Marine Corps. This example offered is one a reported 1,000 of the Chilean contract variation rifles chambered in 7mm Mauser, as opposed to the standard chambering of .30-06 Springfield. Information on the Chilean 7mm M1941 Johnson rifles can be found on pages 162-163 of Canfield's book "Johnson's Rifles and Machine Guns" in which it states, "Soon after the initial NPC [Netherlands Purchasing Commission] order was received, the government of Chile ordered 1,000 M1941 Johnson rifles chambered for the 7mm cartridge for use by mounted troops, probably an elite 'state police' unit. Since JAMCO [Johnson Automatics] could not economically produce such a small quantity of barrels in this caliber, the firm purchased a sufficient number of 7mm Mauser rifle barrels from the National Arsenal in Mexico. The barrels were then assembled to .30 caliber parts on hand and into standard M1941 Johnson rifles. While actually 7mm, the barrel locking bushing still retained the '.30-06' marking [as seen on this example]." These rifles employed several unique features such as the rotary magazine which allows reloading at any time, and a recoiling barrel that has the ability to be easily removed from the rifle by hand for takedown, which allows the rifle to be stowed in a parachute jump bag. The rear, right side of the receiver is marked "CRANSTON/ARMS/CO." in three lines inside a triangle below a small five-pointed Dutch star as commonly seen on Johnson rifles, and the top of the receiver is marked "CAL. 30-'06 SEMI-AUTO./"JOHNSON AUTOMATICS"/MODEL OF 1941/MADE IN PROVIDENCE, R.I., U.S.A." in four lines above the serial number with U.S. and foreign patent date markings to the rear. This example is wearing serial number "4154" on top of the receiver, and the bolt is numbered "6526" (it was standard for numbered components on Johnson rifles to not match). Blade front and adjustable 1,000 meter rear sights. It has a two-piece walnut stock and forend. The barrel bushing has the correct markings of ".30-'06" and "41" for the year on the front flat, and the chamber area of the barrel has a "CAL.7m/m" marking, with an import marking on the bottom of the barrel. Includes a brown leather sling.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Excellent, retaining 95% plus original parkerized finish with some occasional light handling marks and scratches, and some minor surface freckling on the magazine body. Wood is very fine with some slight fading in the forearm, numerous scattered dents and scratches, and defined edges. Mechanically excellent.

Winchester Model 97 Slide Action Takedown Riot Shotgun

Lot # 3394 (Sale Order: 392 of 616)

Outstanding Winchester Model 97 Slide Action Takedown Riot Shotgun

Manufactured in 1952, this is an outstanding example of a Winchester Model 97 takedown riot shotgun, and is without a doubt one of the finest examples we have ever offered at Rock Island Auction Company. Many of these riot shotguns were purchased by the U.S. military for use in all the major conflicts of the 20th century, and even more were purchased by federal, state, and local law enforcement as well as various security agencies. Due to the nature of their often hard service, very few examples remain available to collectors in exceptional condition like this one. Being manufactured in the early 1950s, shotguns like this one would have been a hot commodity for governmental and non-governmental security details during the "Red Scares" to protect American assets and information from communist espionage. Unlike many of its contemporaries, this particular example appears to have been well-cared for or seen light duty, as it remains in incredible condition. The top of the barrel and receiver both have factory oval proofs marked at the breech. The left of the barrel has the standard address, trademark, model, gauge, and chamber length markings. The choke is marked cylinder, and the chamber length is marked 2 3/4 inches. The matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the takedown collar and the frame, with an "E" over the frame serial number. The barrel is fitted with a single steel bead sight, and it is mounted with a 14-groove slight handle and a pistol grip stock with a checkered hard rubber buttplate. The length of pull is 13 3/4 inches.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Excellent, retains 97% plus of the original blue finish with some scattered light handling marks and some light cycling wear on the magazine and slide bar. The wood is also excellent with a few scattered minor scratches and dings. Mechanically excellent. This is one of the finest Winchester Model 97 Riot Shotguns we have ever offered for sale, and it would make a fantastic addition to your collection!

WWII USAAF B-24 Painted A-2 Flight Jacket

Lot # 3396 (Sale Order: 394 of 616)

Identified World War II USAAF 827th Bomb Squadron B-24 Gunner's Painted A-2 Flight Jacket

This World War II USAAF grouping of a painted A-2 flight jacket, two uniform jackets, and other items are the personal effects of Sergeant Phillip L. Fritz, who was assigned to the 827th Bomb Squadron, 484th Bombardment Group, 15th Air Force. Equipped with Consolidated B-24 Liberators, the 827th BS participated in the strategic bombing campaign against Germany in the Mediterranean Theater. The squadron flew against targets in Italy, the Balkans, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Germany, and France from April 1944 until Germany surrendered in May 1945 and earned two Distinguished Unit Citations. At times the squadron diverted from strategic targets to assist troops advancing on to Rome by bombing bridges, supply depots, and marshalling yards and transported supplies to troops taking part in the invasion of southern France. The squadron was inactivated in theater in July 1945. Fritz’s A-2 jacket is a highly creative example of leather canvas featuring several painted leather patches and great artwork covering the back. The jacket was made by J.A. Dubow Manufacturing Co., is a size 38, and has a Talon zipper. The left chest carries Fritz leather name tag along with a painted aerial gunner’s wing. Below the name tag is a painted patch featuring both the 484th BG bow tie insignia and buzzard with a .50 caliber machine gun insignia used by three of the four squadrons attached to the 484th BG. On the right chest is a very unique and custom patch depicting a B-24 nose turret gunner. The left sleeve carries another painted leather patch. This patch has the 15th AF insignia along with a winged star, “MINNESOTA” (Fritz’s home state), and “484 B.G. 827 B.SQ.” The right sleeve carries a painted leather American flag. The back of the jacket serves as the leather canvas for a painted B-24 with 484th BG markings flying above eight flak bursts. Six of the flak bursts expose the names of European countries: Italy, Germany, Austria, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary. Two enlisted man’s uniform coats are included and each coat features 15th AF and USAAF sleeve patches, sergeant rank chevrons, and enlisted lapel insignia. The “Ike” coat has an aerial gunner’s wing badge and three ribbons (Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Good Conduct, and European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three stars). Fritz’s dog tags and extra metal and cloth insignia are also included. Consignor reports that Fritz was possibly a crewman to the B-24 “Sleep Toe.”

Class: Other

The A-2 jacket is very good with authentic wear. The patches display nicely with much of the paint remaining. The artwork on the back remains highly attractive. The leather is supple. The uniform coats are fine. An identified B-24 gunner’s A-2 jacket with highly creative artwork that will look great in aviation collection.

WWII Painted A-2 Flight Jacket Belonging to P-38 Pilot

Lot # 3397 (Sale Order: 395 of 616)

Extremely Desirable World War II Painted USAAF A-2 Flight Jacket Identified to 97th Fighter Squadron P-38 Pilot

This large World War II grouping, including a painted A-2 flight jacket, belonged to Lockheed P-38 Lightning pilot Joseph Scherer of Cleveland, Ohio. He was a member of the 97th Fighter Squadron, 82nd Fighter Group, flying out of North Africa and Italy, and assigned to the 12th Air Force and later the 15th Air Force. A-2 flight jackets belonging to P-38 pilots are highly sought after, and this grouping makes for an exciting addition to any aviation collection. The highlight of the grouping is Scherer’s A-2 jacket. It was manufactured by Perry Sportswear, is a size 38, has a Conmar zipper, and has his service no. “S2498” stamped in ink on the lining near the data label. The back of the jacket serves as the leather canvas for artwork depicting a P-38 painted in black. Other items that comprise this grouping:A great Italian made white silk scarf embroidered with the 97th FS emblem, the devil cat. A photograph of Scherer taken in front of his P-38. Copies of military service paperwork (certificate of service, enlistment record, honorable discharge, and certificate of service). Dress uniform jacket featuring USAAF officer lapel insignia, pilot wing badge, two ribbon bars (Air Medal with Oak Leaf and ETO with four campaign stars), and bullion 15th AF patch. Dress Uniform jacket featuring a 4th AF patch (as noted in his included pocket flight journal, Scherer trained in California with the 4th AF in P-39s). Scherer's handwritten mission diary log describes bombing runs, escort missions, an encounter with the world's first operational jet powered fighter aircraft, the Messerschmitt Me 262, and more. Officer’s crusher cap named to Scherer. Two overseas caps identified to Scherer by his service number. Two neck ties. Three pairs of trousers marked with Scherer’s name. Four patched shirts. Two extra sets of wings along with other metal insignia. Cased Air Medal. Equipped with Lockheed P-38 Lightnings, the 97th Fighter Squadron was attached to the 12th Air Force and arrived in Algeria a month after the initial Allied landings in North Africa. The squadron flew antisubmarine patrols, served as bomber escorts, and attacked enemy shipping and airfields. As the North Africa campaign drew to a close the squadron turned its attention to Italy. On April 25, 1943 squadron earned it first Distinguished Unit Citation for actions taken during an attack on airfields in Foggia. The bombing of Foggia was in preparation for Operation Husky, the Allied invasion of Italy. The squadron earned a second Distinguished Unit Citation for escorting bombers on a mission against marshalling yards near Naples. Once the squadron moved to Italy, it was reassigned to the 15th Air Force and provided fighter cover for heavy bombers. A third Distinguished Unit Citation was received by the squadron for actions taken during an attack on oil refineries in Ploiesti, Romania. The 97th FS was credited for destroying 146 enemy aircraft.

Class: Other

The A-2 jacket is good and displays authentic wear consistent with heavy use and spending time in a cramped P-38 cockpit in the skies over North Africa and Italy. Much of the original paint remains on the back of the jacket. The other items of clothing are very good to fine. Now is your chance to own a rare piece to the P-38 legacy.

Very Scarce and Highly Desirable Vietnam Era U.S. Marked Winchester Model 1200 Slide Action Trench Shotgun

Manufactured during the late 1960s to mid 1970s as one of many commercial Winchester Model 1200 shotguns purchased by U.S. Ordnance, mounted with a heat shield and bayonet lug, and marked with "U.S." stamps. Most were destroyed after service, leading to their scarcity today, with sparse government records of contract deliveries. Refer to pages 177-180 of "Complete Guide to United States Military Combat Shotguns" by Bruce Canfield for further pictures and details on the U.S. Winchester Model 1200 and similar shotguns. U.S. Springfield Armory M1C Sniper Rifle with M82 Sniper Scope

Lot # 3399 (Sale Order: 397 of 616)

U.S. Springfield Armory M1C Garand Semi-Automatic Sniper Style Rifle with M82 Sniper Scope

Developed in 1944, the M1C was the first sniper variant of the Springfield Armory M1 Garand rifle. It was based on the standard semi-automatic rifle fitted with a side mounted Griffin & Howe scope mount issued with either a M81 or later M82 sniper scope. Although effective, the manufacturing process was rather involved, requiring non-heated M1 Springfield receivers to be shipped to Griffin & Howe for the installation and fitting of the G&H designed M1C base and then returned to the armory for complete and final assembly and inspection. They were phased out of production after WWII in favor of the simpler M1D Springfield Armory conversion. Less than 8,000 were completed during WWII with many thousands reissued circa 1951-1953 for the Korean War and later during Vietnam. This receiver was originally manufactured in October 1944 and was rebarreled with a refinished SA barrel marked "1-S-A-10-44". It has the early style locking bar windage and "BATTLE RANGE" elevation drums, very late Springfield bolt, hammer, trigger housing, safety and an early post-war "6535382" marked operating rod. The M1C base is secured to the receiver with two-pins and three-screw arrangement and restamped on the underside with matching numbered "3262733". The original M1C Griffin & Howe scope mount is stamped "3347778" on the right with the address on top. It is fitted with a late production M82 Sniper Scope that is numbered "41650" marked with a stock number of "F001-0084688". Fitted with a walnut sock and handguard set stamped with a boxed "SA/JLG" and cross-cannon cartouche on the side with a circled "P" stamp in the grip area. The buttstock is fitted with an unmarked (WWII) type leather cheekpiece (screws not installed or included) and a checkered steel buttplate. Included with this rifle is a rare early milled SA marked cone flash hider and green web sling.

Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun

Very fine as assembled with 95% of its current gray/green parkerized finish with only minor edge and high spot wear overall with the breech still in the white. The stock and handguards are also very fine with nice clear proof marks showing a nice matching medium brown color overall, mixed with minor handling marks. Mechanically excellent. The G&H scope mount retains 90% of its arsenal type reparkerized finish with some minor pitting on the edges of the scope rings and back side of the mount. The markings are clear and distinct. The scope retains 90% of its original blued finish with clear optics.
