Colt 1st Model Dragoon .44 Cal #4042

Lot # 140 (Sale Order: 177 of 741)

A rare Early U.S. 1nd Model Colt Dragoon Revolver Serial Number 4042 for 1849, second year of production. 7000 manufactured. 7 1/2" barrel, German silver front blade sight, rear V-notch on top of hammer, .44 caliber. oval cylinder stops, square back triggerguard. All Colt “4 pounders” are desirable as they saw hard service on the western frontier and are the quintessential heavy Dragoon revolver. Serial number 4042 has been used hard, but still retains the “Address Saml Colt New York City” address. "U.S." on frame under the Colts Patent. Serial numbers match on the frame, triggerguard, and backstrap, cylinder and the cylinder arbor pin, the wedge is mismatched "037". No SN on the barrel lug and there is no evidence that one was ever there. Hammer action is tight/crisp. "Indian Fight" cylinder scene is faint but all there and visible(rare) , and "U.S. Dragoons" and"Colts Patent" are faint but readable. Sub-inspector mark "B" is stamped on the top of the backstrap, cylinder and the bottom of the triggerguard. Smooth & blended molted gray finish with scattered areas of patina, some dull blue remaining on the loading lever. Brass has a nice aged patina. Bore is fair to good, very good rifling with a patch of pitting near the muzzle. Grips are overall sound with a hair line crack in the left side, there is what appears to be 3 notches cut in the bottom of the right panel. Right panel also has a faint outline of the inspectors cartouche. (WAT for William A. Thornton). Left grip panel is unmarked.Condition is NRA Very Good. Antique Firearm.

German WW1 Pickelhaube (Prussia)

Lot # 140a (Sale Order: 178 of 741)

Rare Imperial German WWI Prussian Ersatz Stahlblech Steel Pickelhaube. The Stahlblech Ersatz-Helme differs from the Eisenblech (tin plate) Pickelhaube as the helmet is pressed from one sheet of steel. Front and rear visors are part of the pressing and are not separate pieces like the traditional boiled leather Pickelhaubes. These helmets often show evidence of being turned on a lathe by the circular patterns found on the shell as can be seen on this example. As these helmets were structurally quite strong, there was no need for the reinforcing front visor trim or rear spine. The helmet has been painted an olive-green. Features a frontplate (wappen) with the Prussian state eagle clutching a scepter and crown, over the Kings motto, MIT GOTT FÜR KOENIG UND VATERLAND (With God for King and Country), brown leather chinstrap. Complete with the Prussian (black and white) and German National Colors (red white and black) kokarden (cockades) (Some chips out of them). There is a small crack on the bottom of the right side. There is no leather sweatband or lining, this rare helmet will display well.
