Springfield M1880 Hunting Knife w/Scabbard.

Lot # 165 (Sale Order: 217 of 741)

Late "Indian Wars" period Springfield Armory Model 1880 Hunting Knife with bright, 8 1/2 inch long, 2" wide spear-point blade, brass guard and turned oak handle. The guard is marked "U.S./Springfield" on the obverse and serial numbered "1045" on the reverse. The leather scabbard & brass hook are marked "Watervliet Arsenal". The Ordnance Department had the Watervliet Arsenals modify the scabbards to remove the loop and add a brass hook (manufacture beginning in 1889), similar to the new 1885 bayonet scabbard brass hook. The Watervliet Arsenal pattern showed a better design, using 4 round head rivets that attached to the hook, and finished flush on the back side. The blade shows faint evidence of sharpening on the front left side, blade also shows very faint scattered pin-prick pitting, barely noticeable. Overall very good condition with some flaking/cracks where the loop bends, still sound.
