Antique Signed Koto Period Japanese Mounted Wakizashi Short Sword - Antique Signed Koto Period Japanese Mounted Wakizashi Short Sword with a signed 14.5" (36.8cm) shobu-zukuri blade. Signature reads: "Mihara ju(nin) Muneshige". Muneshige was working in Bingo province around 1521. Tang is original length with one mounting hole and has a nice dark rust patina. Blade has an irregular gunome hamon temperline consisting of nioi and a medium long turn back boshi at the tip. Habaki is a copper two-piece type with a thin gold wash. There is a small folding flaw on one side of the kissaki point. Hada is a bit hard to see but appears to be a tight small mokume wood grain style. Blade is fitted in buke-zukuri mounts, with a black lacquer painted saya having pockets for kozuka and kogai, but no accessories are present. Unsigned tsuba is a dark copper or shakudo round plate decorated with many small chrysanthemum flowers and fitted with a thin copper rim. There is one gold foil covered copper seppa spacer under the habaki. Tsuka handle is covered with small nodule rayskin and wrapped with blue silk ito cord. Kashira is made of polished black horn. Fuchi is made of copper with decorations of gold pine needle bunches and a silver crescent moon. It is unsigned. Menuki are birds on waves done in shakudo and gold. Condition is good, the blade showing an old professional polish with minor rust spots, stains, and minor scratches. No edge nicks. Blade has the small folding flaw near the tip as noted above. Tang is original length with a nice dark patina. Signature is partially obscured with rust, but easily discernable. Habaki shows age and wear to the gold finish. Gold foil on the seppa is worn and flaking. Tsuka shows age and soiling to the blue silk ito cord, but overall is sound and intact. Horn kashira has a small chip near the top edge. Saya shows losses to the wood body near the mouth opening, chips and losses to the black lacquer paint, splits in the wood body at the edge seams, and is missing the sori-tsuna fitting where a sageo would have been fitted. It has rubber bands holding the saya together. Est.: $400-$700.
