Imperial German Lion Head Artillery Officers Presentation Sword, 31" nickel plated, etched and gold washed blade. Obverse is marked with gold scroll and two surnames "Hertzberg s/l. Gerdes", as likely presented from one individual to the other. Spine is marked "M. Neumann, Hoflieferant Berlin." Gilded hilt is highly decorated and has a lion head pommel with red eyes. Backstrap with plain shield surrounded by scroll patterns. P-shaped guard with floral patterns. Langet features crossed cannons on the obverse side; reverse with scroll patterns. Crossguard with scroll pattern and ends with a downward facing quillon. Above the crossguard is a ferrule decorated with oak leaves. Sharkskin covered handle is triple wrapped in twisted wire. Scabbard with black paint finish and single loose suspension ring. Sword is near excellent overall. Blade is bright, etching crisp, showing mild wear to the gold wash. There is one minor spot of flaking to the nickel finish on the obverse, near the ricasso. Hilt has a few spots of wear to the gilding, otherwise displaying a nice mild patina. Sharkskin with a few light handling marks, handle fits tight to the blade, and the wire wrapping is secure. Scabbard rates fair to good, showing considerable loss of the black paint finish. Obverse side with a moderate dent located 4" up from the tip. It does not interfere with the blade coming in and out of the scabbard. Est.: $900-$1,200.
