Imperial German Lion Head Officers Damascus Blade Presentation Sword, 33" triple-etched and gold washed Damascus blade. Obverse side of the blade with scroll and floral designs against a gold washed background and reads "Kruger s/l Bredan / Frdl. Erg. Weihnachten 1892". Reverse side of the blade with similar patterns but the inscription translates to "For Honor and Duty Until Heart and Blade Break", and "Eisenhauer / Damast-Stahl". Spine is marked "Uniform & Militair Effecten-Fabrik Darmstadt". Hilt and backstrap are highly decorated and has a lion head pommel with red ruby eyes. P-shaped guard, langet features a portrait of a woman on one side, opposite side with crest for Kaiser Wilhelm II. Crossguard ends with a downward facing quillon that features a small lions head. Above the crossguard is a ferrule decorated in oak leaf designs. Sharkskin covered handle is triple wrapped in twisted wire. Scabbard is steel with two loose suspension rings. The inscription and portrait on the langet would suggest this sword was a gift from a woman to her significant other for Christmas in 1892. Sword is very good overall, Damascus pattern is partially visible, with intermittent spots of darkening and mild pitting. Approx. 50% of the gold wash remains. Etched patterns and inscriptions are clear. Hilt has a pleasing uncleaned patina; washer is present and shows expected age and wear. Handle with some movement, sharkskin shows moderate age and wear, wire wrapping is secure. Scabbard is covered with a light rust patina and has a dent on the reverse side, 12.5" up from the tip. It does not interfere with the blade coming in and out of the scabbard. Suspension rings move freely. Est.: $800-$1,200.
