U.S. Model 1917 Trench Knife of Joseph Steinmetz (1870-1928)

Lot # 75 (Sale Order: 73 of 262)

8.75" triangular blued blade.  Seven-stud steel guard with contoured wood grip.  Tip of guard marked "U.S./L.F.&C./1917.  Correct Jewell leather scabbard with steel throat and chape.

Joseph Allison Steinmetz would enjoy an adventurous career as an inventor, soldier, military advisor, and collector, filled experiences that were usually reserved for dime store adventure novels and newspaper serials.

During the Spanish-American War, Steinmetz served as a recruiting officer in Philadelphia with the Army Corps of Engineers.  After the war, he traveled to Cuba and worked actively under the direction of Clara Barton to care for the hundreds of orphans and displaced persons, also known as "reconcentrados" who had suffered greatly from the war.  After his return, he became active in the Red Cross Society of Philadelphia, which had greatly aided his work.

An engineer by trade, he founded Janney, Steinmetz & Company in 1893, and soon became one of the most prominent dealers of steel and iron in Philadelphia. In this capacity he developed a love for aviation, and his firm would provide experimental models for Dr. Samuel Pierpont Langley, aviation pioneer and founder of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory.

His constant tinkering and planning drew the attention of the U.S. Army, for whom Steinmetz wrote Submarine Problems and Torpedo Defense as an advisory document detailing the possible issues in combating the newly-developed art of submarine warfare. This treatise was presented to Woodrow Wilson and then-Chairman of the Navy Board on Inventions for National Defense, Thomas Edison.  He would later take on membership in the Submarine Defense Association and the National Research Council.

In November, 1917, Steinmetz was commissioned a Major in the U.S. Ordnance Reserve, and in December of that year was sent to France in cooperation with the Ordnance Department and War Industries Board to study aviation factories and French ordnance depots.  It was during his time in that country that he carried this knife. Upon his return to America, he resumed his industrial work and would continue to be called upon to advise the President and his cabinet.

Steinmetz died in July 1928, and is buried in Ivy Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, with his wife, Oma.
