German Third Reich Reichsarbeitsdienst (RAD) Leader's Hewer with Scabbard by Eikhorn

10.5" hewer blade with RAD emblem on guard and eagle's head pommel.  Blade etched "Arbeit adelt" (work ennobles).  Obverse ricasso marked with Eikhorn maker's mark.

Similar in purpose to the American CCC or WPA, the German RAD was intended to combat the rampant unemployment plaguing Germany in the 1930s.  Founded in 1934, members of the RAD were tasked with building roads, mending bridges, farming fields, and other work to support national infrastructure.  After 1939, service in the RAD was compulsory, and was soon incorporated into the German Armed Forces as a labor auxiliary force.  Not only did they provide support in the form of supply management and manual labor, but later were organized into proper combat elements such as flak batteries and infantry.

Scarce German Third Reich Technische Nothilfe (TENO) Hewer

Lot # 109 (Sale Order: 107 of 262)

10" hewer blade with standard nickel- plated TENO mounts.  Blade marked with 1935-1941 Carl Eickhorn maker's mark and Reichsadler. Elkhorn squirrel under grips.  Scabbard is likely a replacement.

German Third Reich Hitler Youth Knife

Lot # 114 (Sale Order: 112 of 262)

5.5" blade without ricasso.  Nickel-plated fittings with black riveted bakelite grips and hand-fitted Hitler Youth insignia.  Reverse of blade etched with "Blut und Ehre!" (Blood and iron) motto, with obverse showing maker's mark of J.A. Henckels, Solingen.  Black painted steel scabbard.

As the NSDAP sought to control all aspects of German life, it began the Jugendbund der NSDAP  (Youth Group of the NSDAP) in 1922.  By 1926, it had taken on the name Hitlerjugend (Hitler Youth), the name by which it would be known to history.  From 1936 to 1945, it was the official (and conveniently, the only) youth organization of Germany, and in 1939, membership was compulsory for all boys aged 14-18.  If parents refused, they were subject to investigation by authorities.  At their meetings, youth would be indoctrinated with Nazi ideology, and would also attend large training camps and rallies, preparing them for life in either the army, the Nazi government, or the workforce.  At its height, the Hitler Youth had over 8 million members.  During Germany's last stand, Hitler Youth members as young as 12 years of age were drafted into the army to defend Berlin.  These units suffered heavy casualties, with the "Youth Brigade" having only two survivors.

**Good condition overall.  Some minor wear and dulling of plating with some scratches to blade.  Scabbard is in good condition with some minor paint loss.**

Alcoso German Third Reich Diplomatic Sword

Lot # 120 (Sale Order: 118 of 262)

31.5" spearpoint blade with 23.5" median fuller.  Plated nickel fittings with pearl grip scales.  Blade marked with Alcoso maker's stamp.  Leather scabbard of equal quality with plated fittings en suite.

Considered one of the most prestigious institutions in the Third Reich, the Ausw...rtiges Amt (Foreign Office) was filled with members of Germany's upper classes.  While not all of them wholeheartedly embraced Nazism, the old Prussian attitude of loyalty to the state above all dominated the attitudes of the Foreign Office.  This feeling led to the vast majority of Germany's pre-war diplomats supporting Nazi efforts to violate the 1918 Treaty of Versailles and return Germany to a place of power and prestige on the world stage.

**Very good to fine condition overall.  Some tarnishing and wear to details including Parteiadler.  No major cracks or splits to grip scales.  Some tarnishing to scabbard fittings.  A good example of a sword that is quite rare.**
