C. Winsmith, ledgers and much more.

Lot Of 4 Manuscript Sermons Given During The Years Of 1861-1867 By Lutheran Pastor J. D. Shirey

First sermon is titled "The Enormity Of War" it was given in Aug. 1861 at Mt Tabor Lutheran Church near Staunton Virginia, 32 pages, Sermon discusses the effects of war o...moren mankind and the church. Second Sermon given at the funeral of a confederate soldier, he talks on the bravery of soldier, how his death was one of the first in the community (Mt. Tabor, Va.), sermon is undated but assumed to be early in the war. Third sermon relates to funerals held during the years 1862-1867, also sermon was delivered in 1863 to negro congregation at Mt. Tabor, and lastly sermon given to negros Mt. Tabor 1864. All are hand written, very readable, very rare find. Rev. J. D. Shirey was born in 1836, he attended Roanoke College and was ordained a minister at Gettysburg Sem. in 1860. From 1861-1867 he served at Mt. Tabor near Staunton, Virginia, then in 1867-70 he was a minister at Floyd Co. Va. where he went on to Beth Eden Parrish in Newberry SC from 1870-1882. He then moved to North Carolina and became the minister at Grace & St. Luke-Salem churches from 1882-1889. In 1889 he became president of North Carolina College at Mt. Pleasant until his death in 1896. This is one of many lots by this southern preacher we will be offering in this catalog.

This lot contains 1895 Graduating Class booklet, excellent condition, 3 North Carolina College bond payment receipts 1892 for Capt. Jonas Cook, good condition, 1886 church donation paper, hand written evaluation of North Carolina College by President J. D. Shirey, president Shirey letterhead with hand written speech, 1890 printed document from J. D. Shirey about endowment and importance of North Carolina College to the church. 1880's N C College letterhead listing faculty and 12 page hand written inauguration of J. D. Shirey to president Of North Carolina College in 1891 on college stationary with list of officers and b/w mast head image of college. papers are found in good condition with normal expected wear.

Owen dubs book as exceedingly rare, was a first hand account of the opening campaigns of the American Revolution in Louisiana and the Natchez County. Book is bound in its original leather covered boards, it is found in fair condition with loss of leather, corners and edges bumped, spine is missing half its leather, interior is also fair with top half of title page missing otherwise its complete, a few pages have edge chipping, page foxing and toning throughout, amazingly still somewhat tight and complete.

Capt. Jonas Cook was a prominent resident of Mt. Pleasant NC, he owned numerous businesses such as Cook and Foil country store, he organized a company of volunteers which entered the confederate ranks as Company H Eight North Carolina Regiment, he was commissioned a captain, he was wounded at Drury's Bluff Va. Lot is found in average condition with normal expected wear.

This lot of sermons were initially given during the years of the Civil War,...more the Southern branch of the Lutheran church was supportive of the Confederate cause. Rev. Shirey kept impeccable records of where he preached his sermons by making notes giving location, date of the deliverance of his sermons, he noted if they were for funerals and negro congregation. This lot contains 44 sermons. All are hand written and very readable, this lot gives us insight to the message that was delivered during the war and after. Very good condition, with normal expected wear.

This small accounting book relates to various members of the Marshall family of Charlotte County Virginia, mainly Elizabeth Watkins Bettie Marshall born in 1830 and died...more 1901, she was laid to rest in the village cemetery at Charlotte Court House, Va. Mrs. Bettie Marshall must have kept the farm account book, it contains numerous entries dating from 1866-1872, some of names found within include, Henry Bouldin, Louis Lee, William Green and many others, also included are numerous hand written recipes. A few pieces of ephemera are scattered among the book. Neat slice of post civil war farming accounting history. Book is bound in paper covered boards with leather spine, binding is in fair condition, interior has some pages detached but is mostly intact and readable.

Ex book Belonging to Samuel Mathis 1760-1825 Of Camden South Ca...morerolina who was reported to be the first white male child born in Camden, he enjoyed a long career as a soldier, merchant, lawyer, politician and preacher. Other name wrote in book is Thomas Williams. Book is bound in its original leather boards with paste on burgundy labels with gilt titles. Binding is reasonably tight for its age, covers are rubbed with edge wear, cracking at spine but still attached. Interior is intact with owners paste in book plate on interior front cover and owners names in ink on flyleaf's and title page, there is some damp staining on back flyleaf's otherwise interior is clean with even age toning throughout.

Interior is reasonably clean with occasional foxing, most of the plates are clean with tissue guards. selling as found. William Bartlett was a highly recognized artist of his day. His illustrations in this book traditionally sell for $25-$50 each.

It was published by P. Husson at Hague, first quarto edition. 1724. Books contain 56 copper engraved plates (Several Folding), 8 engraved maps (6 Folding). Maps include Map Of North America with California as an island, isle of Barbados, Martinique, plus 5 others. Books are bound in a later leather binding with gilt tiles on labels on spine (1800's), covers have wear on edges and on spine, both volumes front covers are detached, back covers are weak but still attached, binding is amazingly tight and the interior is exceptionally clean. Nice restorable copy of this scarce work, similar examples have been offered at $1000 dollars and up.
