Important early account of the Battle Of Waterloo by James Sim...morepson, First American edition from the British second edition. Published by S. Campbell, New York,1816, original leather binding, fold out map of battle, very good condition, leather covers are rubbed and weak at spine, binding has red paste down label on spine with gilt titles 3 1/2" X 5 1/2", interior has even page toning throughout with more evident near the front of book. This early history was owned by Lionel Chalmers Kennedy, a well known and respected physician, confederate civil war veteran and the donor of his books by his wife, to the first public library in Spartanburg S. C. founded on October 17, 1885. This book is signed in a few places By Dr. Kennedy and has one of the original library paste in labels on front fly leaf and interior cover.

This raised letter braille book is titled Lady Of The ...moreLake Compiled In One Book by Sir Walter Scott, published in 1868 by the North Carolina Institution for the Death and Dumb and Blind, at Raleigh NC, printed on lower title page. This form of tactile writing was predominately used in America until the dot system came into wide use. Book is bound in stiff boards with leather spine, it is found in reasonably good condition considering its use and age, covers are rubbed and corners bumped, leather spine is intact but creased. Interior is very good, assumed to be complete, truly a unique and rare North Carolina slice of history. A few examples have sold for $300-600.00

Civil War Era Scrape Album belonging To General J. C. Winsmith Of Spartanburg South Carolina

John Christopher Winsmith was the son of Dr. John Winsmith, they were wealthy land and slave owners in Spartanburg Co. S.C. Dr. Winsmith was a prominent physician and sta...morete legislator, J.C. Winsmith attended the Citadel in Charleston SC, in 1859 J. C. obtained his law degree from Charleston College, he first was enlisted as a Liet. in Company G of the fifth S. C. Vol. Infantry, in May of 1862 he became a Capt. with Company H of the first South Carolina Volunteer Infantry, Winsmith was wounded twice, he was a fervent supporter of the confederate cause. After the war he joined the republican party and began supporting their platform in the south, Black rights, which caused him backlash from the Ku Klux Klan who attempted to assonate him in 1870. The scrape album offered in this lot belonged to J. C. Winsmith, on front fly leaf of album it is signed by him with later added provenance written along the top of this page spelling out its chain of ownership. The scrape album contains newspaper articles beginning in the 1850's and running to the mid 1870's, it illustrates the interest J. C. Winsmith had during these years. Some of the articles included are Negro plot in Charleston SC. politics in SC during reconstruction, The Great Cotton Interest And The Slavery Question, article on the Morgan Rifles with list of officers and men, election results in Spartanburg in 1865 and so much more. This album is heavy with reconstruction issues discussed after the civil war. Album is found in fair condition, bound in paper covered boards with leather spine, top cover and the first 10 pages detached from spine, some of the pages have darkened from the use of the glue. Pages have chipping along its edges but most content is in good readable condition. Truely a piece of South Carolina history coming from one of SC's more prominent citizens.

Book is bound in full leather with gilt lines on spine, front cover in ink has John Shimpoch, his book and back cover has Nathaniel H. Barringer, July 1836 in ink, interior is in good condition with owners name on front flyleaf with date 1831, book is illustrated with fold outs and plates, pages have light age toning and a few ink spots, binding is tight. Overall very good condition.

Ball is considered one of the early Black photographers of the day, his images are highly desirable and command strong prices at auction. This fine lot contains a image of a man with J. P. Ball backstamp at address No. 30 West 4th Street between Main & Walnut Streets, Cincinnati, Ohio, Second photograph is a bust portrait of a man, on back is a 3 cent Washington revenue stamp and name Ball & Thomas Art gallery at 120 W. 4th Street, Cin'ti, last image is of a standing carte-de visite of a Civil War soldier holding his hat in full uniform, it is impressed with J. P. Ball 30 W 4th Street below image in margin, all images are found in very good condition.
