Extremely Rare Wooden "Blitz", the Riding Rocking Horse by Schoenhut 5000/7500

Lot # 55 (Sale Order: 55 of 307)      

45" (114 cm.) l. rockers. The carved wooden horse with swivel head and jointed legs has original dappled white finish, amber glass eyes, carved open mouth with painted te...moreeth, leather ears, horsehair mane and tail, painted hooves. There is a heavy cast metal rod from under-torso which attaches to a wooden platform, which, in turn, is mounted on original wooden rockers. Condition: generally excellent, original finish throughout. Comments: Schoenhut, circa 1910, the pony was presented as "Blitz" in the company's catalogs, shown in an original catalog photograph with a Schoenhut grandson riding atop, and was available as a standing pony (posed on cast metal rod with wooden base) or with the attached rockers. Value Points: either version of "Blitz" is rare as the toy was quite expensive for its time; this rocking version is virtually never found, especially in this remarkably preserved condition.

When the toy is pulled along, the animals appear to be running along backward and forward, independently. Very good condition, mechanism functions well, some mohair sparseness on face of pup. German Pull-Toy Mohair Bunnies on Eccentric Wheel Base by Steiff 600/900

6" (15 cm.) l. A black three-wooden wheeled base is connected by a metal frame, and a wooden bar supports two red wooden circular platforms upon which are posed two mohai...morer bunnies with black shoe-button eyes. The toy is designed to be pulled along, causing two wheels to react with the platforms, causing them to revolve. Very good condition, some mohair wear, the mechanism functions when the wheels are manually revolved but not when the mechanism is pulled. Germany, Steiff, from the series of eccentric wheel toys, each bunny has original early Steiff button with underscored F, and original red cloth label indicating number 81/3586, circa 1930s.

American Show Wagon with Performers from Humpty Dumpty Circus, Schoenhut 8000/9500

20" (51 cm.) Two dappled wooden horses with glass eyes are posed upon a wooden wheeled platform, and are pulling a wooden show wagon with flat-top stage upon which are po...moresed three side-show performers and the wagon driver. The wagon, with original red painted and gilt decorations, is embossed Humpty Dumpty Circus along with raised designs of a chariot and man on horse. The detachable performers include Foxy Grandpa, Jockey and Baby, each with distinctively-modeled face, hand-painted facial features and hair or cap. Condition: generally excellent, original finish overall is well-preserved with few paint rubs on Baby hair. Comments: Schoenhut, the Show Wagon from Humpty Dumpty's Circus, circa 1909. Value Points: considered a highlight of the Schoenhut circus creations, few complete sets are known to exist, especially in this remarkable state of original preservation.

American Wooden Circus Chariot with Glass-Eyed Burro, Clown by Schoenhut 1800/2300

A wooden-floored chariot has pressed paper board sides with original red painted and embossed gilt designs including lion's head, and wooden gilt wheels edge...mored in silver is being pulled by a wooden burro with brown glass eyes, rope tail, leather ears, original red leather harness, and with wheeled spindle at lower torso. Riding in the chariot is a wooden clown with two-part head, original costume and hat. Condition: generally excellent, some dustiness of clown costume. Comments: Schoenhut, circa 1910, from the Humpty Dumpty Circus of that firm. Value Points: the clown, the glass-eyed burro and the chariot are each extremely rare, and are all original.

Along with the following animals: giraffe, zebra, tiger, leopard, alligator, lion, hippopotamus, and rhinoceros (paint worn), each with glass eyes except lion. Excellent original condition on all but as noted. American, Schoenhut, the set was introduced by the firm in 1909, to commemorate Teddy Roosevelt's safari to Africa to collect specimens for the Smithsonian Museum. NOTE: THE WOMAN IN WHITE COSTUME SHOWN ABOVE IS LOT 67.1.

Mounted upon original twill-covered base is a bisque bust of a laughing child with blonde sculpted hair having well-defined forelock curl, intaglio blue eyes...more, black and grey incised eyeliner, painted lower lashes, single-stroke brows, accented nostrils, closed mouth with laughing expression, modeled tongue tip, impressed dimples at lip corners and cheeks. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: SFBJ, model 235 from their art character series, inspired by the French storybook character "Jean Qui Rit" (John who laughs). Value Points: rare character with especially fine quality of sculpting and bisque, impressed dimples at eye corners and mouth.
