French Child's Painting Set "Prix de Rome" with Original Easel 600/900
Lot # 26 (Sale Order: 26 of 306)
23" (58 cm.) easel. An artist easel with faux-wood-grained cover is surmounted by a gilt lettered "Prix de Rome", and supports a child's paint box with lovely engraving on the lid to suggest an actual painting; hinging open to reveal various artist supplies viz. brushes, miniature palette, miniature easel, paints on silver dishes, and more, still tied to the box and in unplayed with condition. The famous Prix de Rome, established in 1663,was a famous prize awarded to a promising French art student each year, and was a natural theme for creation of a child's toy painting set. The set was presented in Parisian Etrennes catalogs, circa 1890.

Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Simon and Halbig, circa 1885. French Paper Mache Pull-Toy Bulldog 1600/2500

Paper mache bulldog with flocked finish, well-defined musculature, original leather collar and ruff, black ears, brown glass eyes, wooden wheels hidden on underside of feet, hinged jaw that when opens and closes when silver pull-chain is pulled, causing the bull dog to growl in a "ferocious" manner, and expose his jaws and teeth. French, circa 1890. Excellent condition, a well modeled and preserved example of the classic toy.

French Maitrise Model Bombe Chest with Hand-painted Scenes 600/900

All wooden two-drawer chest with bombe-shaped front, cabriole legs, grey marble top with beveled edge, has hand-painted courtly scenes, and is trimmed with very ornate gold-leaf bronze drawer pulls and mounts. French, in the Louis XV style, created in the mid-20th century as salesman's sample of a fine Parisian furniture line.

Rare French Doll Furniture with Maker's Mark of Collet 600/900

21" (53 cm.) armoire. Of light maple wood with faux-bamboo ornamental carvings, comprising armoire with full-length mirror on one door, shelved interior on other door, and single drawer, with silver handles; along with matching three-drawer chest with faux-marble top. Each piece bears the insignia stamp of Collet of Paris. Near mint unplayed with condition. Collet Freres, successor to Choumer & Collet, creators of doll furniture since 1867. These exact pieces are shown in a 1910 advertisement of Collet, as shown in The Encyclopedia of French Dolls by Theimer, page 146.
German Bisque Multi-Head Doll Set "Wunderkind" by Kestner 4000/6000

Bisque socket head, brown glass sleep eyes, painted lashes, lightly feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, open mouth, accented lips, four porcelain teeth, brunette mohair wig with coiled side braids, composition and wooden ball-jointed body. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 136 2/0. Comments: Kestner, circa 1910, the doll was marketed as "Wunderkind Charakter puppe" along with three additional bisque character heads portraying various expressions, each with glass sleep eyes, closed mouth with pouty or laughing lips, original mohair wig, plaster pate, including models 180, 184, and 185. Value Points: rarely found set in appealing petite size, with original wigs, excellent quality bisque and modeling on each.

Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 9027 Germany 402 1/2. Comments: Limbach, circa 1915. Value Points: rare model with wonderful detail of facial and hair sculpting, large all-bisque size.

Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Ges gesch O'Neill JDK 11 ( head) O'Neill (ink script on foot). Comments: Kestner, circa 1910, designed by Rose O'Neill and produced under license by Kestner for one or two years only. Bisque socket head, brown glass side-glancing googly eyes, thick black eye liner, short painted side lashes, angled brows with ochre shading, rounded nose with accented nostrils, closed mouth with impish smile on shaded lips, brunette mohair bobbed wig over plaster pate, composition and wooden ball-jointed toddler body with side-hip jointing. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: F made in Germany 10 JDK 221 Ges Gesch. Comments: Kestner, circa 1912, the rare model was inspired by the Kewpie design of Rose O'Neill and bears a remarkable resemblance to that doll (see #45, opposite page). Value Points: superb example of the beloved googly with original wig, pate, body, body finish, romper costume included.

Comments: Simon and Halbig, their transitional character model 1249 sometimes also marked "Santa" on head, circa 1900. Value Points: beautiful doll with gentle expression, lovely bisque, original and rare signed "Santa" body with original finish, factory original costume.
Very Rare German Bisque Character, 212, by Kestner with Glass Eyes 3000/4000

Bisque socket head, small brown glass sleep eyes, painted long curly lashes, feathered brows, accented nostrils of upturned rounded nose, closed mouth with slightly downcast pensive lips, blonde mohair wig over plaster pate, composition and wooden ball-jointed body, antique boy's corduroy and knit suit with leather saddle shoes. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: D made in Germany 212 (head) Excelsior (body). Comments: Kestner, circa 1910, the rare model was made with painted or glass eyes. Value Points: the model is virtually never found, this example with very fine bisque and expression, original signed body and body finish.

Comprising golden brown teddy with shoe-button eyes, brown embroidered nose and paws, and a smaller light brown teddy, with amber glass eyes and dark brown embroidered nose, each with excelsior-filling, felt paws, stitched ears. Each with original Steiff metal button in ear with underscored f. Fair to good condition, mohair sparse, but original throughout. Germany, Steiff, circa 1920's.
Rare German "Peter Bear" Teddy by Sussenguth in Original Box 1000/1400

13" (33 cm.) Firmly shaped head with shaded dark brown mohair cover, excelsior filled body and jointed limbs with same mohair coat, cut-out eye sockets and open mouth, painted teeth, inset "movable" eyes and tonque, brown felt paw pads. Condition: excellent. Marks: Peter, ges gesch Nr 895256 (label on bear) (and original paper label on box with illustration of bear). Comments: Gebruder Sussenguth, circa 1924, the bear was produced in four sizes (this being the smallest) for a few years only; described as having "lateral movement of eyes and tongue, brought about by gravity". Value Points: rare teddy in perfectlyu preserved condition.
