Early French Wooden Cabinet with Shell Arrangement and Porcelain Dolls 1500/2000
Lot # 76 (Sale Order: 76 of 306)
26" (66 cm.) cabinet. A wooden cabinet with arched roof and glass front, contains within an elaborate shell arrangement depicting a fountain surmounted by an archway and reached by stairs. Standing on either side of the fountain are a porcelain man and woman, each with painted facial features and hair, and each wearing an original Brittany folklore costume in elaborate detail. Excellent condition, the shell work was a tradition of the Brittany region of France throughout the 19th century and can occasionally be found incorporated into a presentation with dolls as this wearing traditional Brittany costumes; it is likely the elaborate piece was created to commemorate an important marriage of the region, circa 1865.
Three French Miniature Military Helmets 500/700
Lot # 77 (Sale Order: 77 of 306)
2.5" (6 cm.) Each is of heavy card stock with flocked cover and elaborate gilded decorations, feathers, and cord braid, comprising 1803 Hussar helmet, officer's helmet of the Foreign Legion (Legion Etranger) of 1831, and tricorn hat. Created at the beginning of the 20th century, the realistic models are authentic in detail, and appropriate for costuming military dolls about 15"-17". Excellent condition.
An Extraordinary French Paper Mache Lady in Original Costume with Provenance 3000/4500
Lot # 78 (Sale Order: 78 of 306)
28" (71 cm.) (excluding coronet). Solid domed paper mache shoulder head with black painted pate, oval shaped face with elongated strong throat, black enamel inset eyes, delicately painted lashes, thick brush stroked brows, aquiline shaped nose with accented nostrils, closed mouth, pale accented lips, brunette human hair, original kid lady body with shapely torso, one piece shapely legs and arms, stitched and separated fingers and toes. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Circa 1845, the lady doll wears her original ivory satin gown with gold metallic embroidery and fringe, ivory sash, aqua satin floor-length cape, slippers, and a long veil that cascades from a silver coronet decorated with faux-diamonds and silk flowers. The doll is mounted upon her original wooden stand with painted decorations (see inset photo), and has her original medal with cutwork paper flowers and decorations detailing the doll's significance. Value Points: superb preservation of the rare and large early doll, the complexion, painting and body in perfect pristine state, the costume original; the doll was exhibited for many decades in the famous Musee Roybet-Fould outside of Paris.
Rare French Bisque Poupee Portraying Turkish Princess with Beauty Spots 4500/6500

18" (46 cm.) Amber tinted bisque swivel head on kid-edged amber bisque shoulder plate, brown glass enamel inset eyes, dark painted eye liner, painted black lashes and curvy wide brows, accented eye corners and nostrils, closed mouth with accented lips, two black beauty spots on face with enhancing decorative glaze, pierced ears, black mohair wig over cork pate, kid poupee body with gusset jointing, amber bisque arms to above the elbows, wearing original golden silk tapestry costume, bracelets. Condition: generally excellent, two right fingers broken at knuckles. Comments: maker unknown, circa 1867, the doll was likely custom created to appeal to the wealthy Turkish royalty that traveled to the 1867 Paris Exposition; few examples are known to exist.
Six Chinese Paper Mache Miniature Dolls in Original Costumes 500/800

7" (18 cm.) largest. Each has paper mache or composition head with painted facial features, painted grey pate, cloth body, composition or wooden loosely-limbed hands and feet. Condition: generally excellent. Comments: Chinese, circa 1920. Value Points: the charming miniature dolls have variations of facial expression with impish smiles, and wear their original silk costumes with embroidered details.
Three Miniature French Military Hats 500/800

3" (8 cm.) excluding feathers. Each has stiffened paste board shape with felt or woolen covering and rich braid or fabric trim in authentic detail. Included is 1805 Grenadier with eagle medallion, feather and tassels; 1804 Officiel Etat Major, and tricorn Napoleonic hat with feathers and rosette. Each has its original wooden display stand. From a series of authentic miniature helmets of historical French regiments, circa 1930. Excellent condition, wonderful for display or suitable for costuming poupee dolls about 15"-17".

Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 9 (head, and artist checkmarks) Jumeau Medaille d'Or Paris (body). Comments: Emile Jumeau, circa 1878. Value Points: grand size poupee with pristine condition of body and bisque, is wearing original couturier costume to portray Napoleon or Napoleon-era gentleman, comprising fitted white woolen long coat, trousers and leggings, fine silk patterned double-breasted vest with gold buttons, shirt, tunic, stockings, leather shoes, and black felt tricorn hat with French rosette.
German Bisque Portrait of Chinese Baby with Rare Painted Hair by Kestner 3500/4500

Bisque socket head with solid dome and amber-tinted complexion, black painted baby hair with stippling details around the forehead, brown glass sleep eyes in half-moon shape, black painted lashes, black feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, open mouth, accented lips, two porcelain upper teeth, outlined lips, amber tinted composition baby body, antique cotton Chinese costume. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: Made in Germany (body). Comments: Kestner, circa 1915, their portrait of Chinese baby, this being the rare painted hair version. Value Points: rare model with beautifully sculpted features, unique for this model, and excellent detail of painted hair, original body and body finish.
Rare French Bisque Automaton "The Flower Seller" by Vichy 6000/9000

11" (28 cm.) A bisque swivel-headed lady with rich amber complexion, kid-lined bisque shoulder plate, large brown glass eyes, painted lashes and brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth with center accent line, pierced ears, black mohair wig, carton torso, wire upper arms and legs, paper mache lower arms and legs, is attached to a flower cart with three metal spoked wheels and woven basket bed containing a large arrangement of silk flowers. When wound from key at side of body, the lady briskly walks forward pushing the flower cart. Condition: generally excellent, mechanism functions well. Comments: Vichy, circa 1875, the automaton has the classic Vichy key. Value Points: beautiful and rare automaton with lovely amber tinted complexion, dramatic brown eyes, nicely fashioned original cart, functions well.

Condition; generally excellent, slight costume fading. Comments: Chinese Door of Hope mission doll, circa 1925. Value Points: the handsome boy doll wears his original hand-sewn tunic, leggings, slippers.

Pale bisque swivel head with flat-cut neck socket on kid-edged bisque shoulder plate, swivel mechanism allows the head to turn side to side but not completely around, cobalt blue glass enamel inset eyes, dark rich eye liner, painted lashes, arched feathered brows, accented nostrils and eye corners, closed mouth, pale accented lips, pierced ears, brunette mohair wig over cork pate, kid gusset-jointed poupee body with bisque arms to above the elbows, finely sculpted hands with slightly cupped fingers, defined knuckles and nails, wearing lovely antique dress, undergarments, leather boots signed C.C., silk bonnet. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: J. Depose. Comments: circa 1865, a system for articulating the head in this realistic manner was deposed by Adelaide Huret in 1861; the "J" initial may refer to Pierre-Francois Jumeau who commissioned the production of the model. Value Points: very beautiful poupee with rare swivel head attachement, gorgeous bisque and painting, rare body style.

Pale bisque swivel head with uniquely sculpted recessed scalp to allow for realistic application of wig, oval facial shape and elongated throat, high forehead, aquiline nose, blue glass paperweight inset eyes, dark eye liner, painted lashes, feathered brows, accented eye corners, shaded nostrils, closed mouth with accented lips, pierced ears, brunette human hair wig, kid poupee body with gusset jointing, shapely torso, stitched and separated fingers. wearing lovely antique gown, undergarments, fingerless gloves. Condition: generally excellent, body is appropriate and very sturdy and clean, albeit signed Jumeau. Comments Leverd & Cie, the hair design was deposed by that firm in 1869 and the model, likely made by Bru, was created for one or two years only. Value Points: among the rarest of the French poupees. combining rarity with exquisite and majestic beauty, superb bisque and painting, including detail of ears, nose and chin, indentations around the eyes.

Condition: generally excellent Marks: C EJ (head) Jumeau Medaille d'Or Paris (body). Comments: Emile Jumeau, circa 1880, one of the earliest model bebes, the doll is being sold by the original family owners. Value Points: rare and beautiful early model, along with her original family-sewn trousseau, comprising six dresses, 20 pieces of undergarments, three bonnets, four pairs of leather shoes (one signed M.G., one signed E. Jumeau Med. Or 1878 Paris"), five pairs of socks, various accessories including roller skates) along with a wooden (bit worn) trunk with brilliant purple-paper lined interior.
