French Bisque Bebe Gigoteur by Jules Steiner for Au Nain Bleu 3000/4500

Lot # 103 (Sale Order: 103 of 306)      

18" (46 cm.) Solid domed bisque head with rounded facial shape, blue glass enamel inset eyes, painted lashes and brows, dark eye liner, accented nostrils and eye corners, open mouth, shaded and accented lips, two rows of tiny porcelain teeth, pierced ears, blonde mohair wig, carton torso containing clockwork mechanism, composition arms and lower legs, kid-over metal upper legs. When keywound, the doll turns its head from side to side, waves arms and legs in baby-like manner, and cries "mama". Condition: generally excellent, mechanism functions well. Comments: Bebe Gigoteur by Jules Steiner, circa 1885. Rare French Child's Costume of Vivandiere with Lace Coiffe 600/900

Lot # 105 (Sale Order: 105 of 306)      

The unusual costume features a blue and red fitted woolen jacket with elaborate brass buttons and French red, white and blue rosette, along with red, white and blue heavy homespun skirt, and a tulle coiffe with wide ruffled lace edging trimmed with gold silk ribbons. The costume is of the Vivandiere, the nurse who aided wounded battlefield soldiers during the Franco/Prussian War of 1870. The costume was displayed in the windows of Paris doll store, Au Nain Bleu. Condition: generally excellent. Marks: 3 (head) 2 (torso and feet) B (impressed left foot). Comments: SFBJ, circa 1910. Value Points: the little bebe wears her original deluxe blue velvet coat and bonnet, undergarments, brown leather shoes impressed "3", and has an original calling card from Madame Germaine Jumeau (likely the daughter, Helene-Germaine, of Emile Jumeau) with the inscription (in French) of best wishes for good memories. The gift and notation indicate the family's continuing close connection with the firm even after the SFBJ formation; Germaine would have been about 25 years old in 1910....more
