Message from the President (1847) re War with Mexico & Indian Affairs

Lot # 15 (Sale Order: 16 of 381)

Message from the President of the United States, to the Two Houses of Congress, at the Commencement of the First Session of the Thirtieth Congress, December 7, 1847 (Washington: Wendell and Van Benthuysen, 1848).  Rebound in 1/2 green leather with marbled paper boards; spine title in gilt; 1369, 249pp.  Much on the War with Mexico, including maps and charts and the 249-page Secretary of Wars report bound with the Message as an appendix.  It reads as a detailed history of the War with Mexico.  Also includes reports from the Commissioner of Indian Affairs.  President Polk set forth the argument that it was in Upper Californias best interest to be governed by the US as it was too far removed from the government in Mexico, and that Mexico was too feeble to maintain control of it much longer.  The many fold-out maps and charts have not been collated, but it appears as if most, if not all, are present as issued.  Considerable foxing and toning throughout the volume with some moisture stains, but still very readable.  The binding is in VG+ to Fine condition.  [BK-79] ...more
