Cal. 44 HRF. S# 7621. The US Government purchased 1,731 Henry rifles during the Civil War. Rifles in the 7,000-9,000 S# range are found w/ Type II martial markings. The Type II marking on this rifle is a sm. "JT" that is light but easily visible on the left side of the stock behind the receiver. Many of the Type II rifles were purchased near the end of the war accounting for the fact they are sometimes found in abnormally fine condition. Bbl. 24 1/4" oct. w/ integral mag. having rotating loading gate. Top flat has long style 3 9/32" bbl. marking "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT. 16, 1860 / MANUFACT'D BY THE NEW HAVEN ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CT.". German silver blade front sight. Graduated 900 yd. leaf rear sight. Walnut stock has the Henry bump. Type II brass crescent trapdoor buttplate having pointed peak. Rear sling swivel on left side of stock, front sling loop is located on left side of bbl. & mag. tube. Matching S#s are found at rear of top bbl. flat, left side of lower inside receiver tang, top tang channel of stock & lower inside portion of buttplate. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: scarce original 4 piece cleaning rod held in trapdoor butt. CONDITION: bbl. finish has faded to a pleasing mottled brown patina w/ scattered spots of darker surface oxidation. Brass has a wonderful aged mellow mustard patina w/ sm. areas of brighter finish appearing on the action & tangs. Stock has good finish showing scattered scratches & marks. Bore is exceptional. It is generally quite bright & retains sound rifling. There are tiny spots of light pitting primarily near the muzzle. A rare opportunity to acquire a seldom seen high grade martially marked Henry rifle. (01-16630/DS/BF). ANTIQUE. $32,000-38,000.
