Item Description: Translate description
DESCRIPTION: Original numbered WWI Purple Heart medal, with Sergeant Baker’s name engraved on the back. These were not issued until the 1930’s and only if the vet requested one. The original letter, dated 1936, from the adjutant general’s office accompanies the medal. Also in the grouping is the actual piece of shrapnel that hit Sgt. Baker in 1918 with a note indicating that it was "In Argonee piece of German 75 shell which was in David's head from ~5pm Sept 14, 1914to between 4 am & 5am next morning.". The box also includes his sergeant’s stripes with an AEF pin, his Meuse Argonne campaign medal, and a large “For God & Country” American Legion School Award medal and pin.
