Overview of 19th Century Presentation Grade M1860 Staff and Field Officer’s Sword by M.C. Lilley & Co.
Item Details
Manufactured by the firm M.C. Lilley & Co. of Columbus, Ohio between 1874 and 1882. They were a high-quality sword maker in the United States, often featuring German-made blades marked with a knight's helmet logo which this one has. It is a nice early elliptical double-edged blade. The blade is handsomely hand engraved, with a federal eagle on the left side of the blade. Military and floral engraved motifs are present on both sides of the blade. The presentation initials “PC” in script are engraved on the blade. The hilt is made of gilt brass with an ornate design including an eagle on the guard, a folding counterguard, and a wire-wrap between the elegant floral pattern designed grip. The sword comes complete with its original scabbard and gold bullion sword knot, which is also in very good condition | Measurements: 30” Blade, 36” Overall length, 31.5” Scabbard.
