SPRINGFIELD 1873 RIFLE TRAP-DOOR 45-70 SN:16969 *Antique Fire Arm--Officers Model – See page 161 “The Peacemakers” by R. L. Wilson.-- Officers Model – See page 161 “The Peacemakers” by R. L. Wilson. Bluing & mechanical condition is excellent. Took rifle to a local old time gun smith Bud Hobson who gradated form Colorado School of Gun Smithing. The Springfield trap door was purchased w/ a loose barrel & the rear sight missing. He tightened the barrel & installed a Buckhorn rear sight. Original trap door Springfield's when rapid fired like was required at the battle of the Little Big Horn overheated causing the brass cases jam & not eject. Bud slightly reamed the inside of the bullet chamber so it corrected the jamming problem although I have never fired the rifle. When I picked up the rifle I made the comment that it seemed to have a heavy duty replacement short octagon barrel installed. Normally Bud is a man of few words; however, he commented "That's funny as the barrel has the same serial number as the frame." Months later in a Colt or Winchester reference book by R L Wilson an antique picture of a union civil war officer was observed w/ a short octagon barrel Springfield his side. Thus, my conclusion it appears that this model is likely an officers model. Up until that time I had not been bale to identify this trapdoor Springfield. The checkering on one side of the grip is original. The opposite side checkering looks like it was traced & is of inferior quality. This trap door has been traced via Springfield Research Services web site. The rifle S/N is traced to the"Triple L 5Th CAV. & this 8 page documentation come w/ the rifle.
