32" BLADE - LEATHER GRIP SHOWS AGE CRACKS BUT WIRE WRAP IS TIGHT. SCABBARD SHOWS PLUMB PATINA & SEVERAL DENTS - THE UNITED STATES REGIMENT OF DRAGOONS WAS FORMED MARCH 2, 1833 & SO BECAME THE ONLY MOUNTED TROOPS ON THE PERMANENT ESTABLISHMENT. A NEW SABER WAS REQUIRED FOR THESE TROOPS & A CONTRACT WAS MADE W/ NP AMES OF SPRINGFIELD, MA TO PRODUCE THEM. THE PATTERN CHOSEN CLOSELY FOLLOWED THE BRITISH LIGHT CAVALRY SABER OF 1822.
