Item Details

* Rare Ellis-Jennings, U.S. Contract M-1817 4-shot Repeating Common Rifle, .54 cal, s/n NSN, muzzleloader, brl length 36" round, very good plus condition, flintlock repeating action. This is a fine untouched example of one of the rarest and most desirable military arms ever produced and is in exceptional condition for its age. Reuben Ellis received a contract from the Ordnance Department under the Militia Act of 1808 for a total of 520 of these rifles to be issued to the State of New York. They were assembled by R & D Johnson of Middletown, Ct. under the Isaiah Jenning's patent during this period. Two inspectors would oversee production with Justin Murphy "JM" inspecting the first 360 and Asabel Hubbard "AH" inspecting the remaining balance with a total number of 521 being produced upon completion of the contract. It is unknown how many still survive today but it is believed very few exist with even fewer being in this high condition. The design called for a lock mechanism that slides laterally rearward in a channel on the right side of the barrel. There are three dog leg touch hole covers that rotate upwards to expose the next shot and also act as a stop to make sure the mechanism indexes into battery. The flint cocking mechanism has a small vessel attached to the hammer that dispenses a predetermined amount of powder into the brass flash pan and once fired the stop is lifted, the mechanism slide rearward, indexed cock and fired again repeating the process until all the rounds have been exhausted. The rounds are loaded in a superposed fashion through the muzzle with the bore of this rifle having very nice shine and rifling. The breech area of the barrel is marked "US/AH/P" having been inspected by Asabel Hubbard. The right shoulder of the stock at the tang is stamped "2241" and there is a faint but visible cartouche on the left side of the stock flat above the trigger in an oval. The sights forward and rear are both fixed and the sling swivels are present with the front swivel being mounted to the barrel band and the rear being mounted to an elongated extension of the trigger guard. The oval patch box has a brass tipped retaining clip with the ramrod being brass tipped as well. The walnut stock shows assorted light handling for its age and being a military long arm. It has assorted pressure indentations and light scratches along with a small crack on the left side starting at the breech traveling rearward and down being approximately 1.75" long. The metal surfaces show some flash pitting with very little wear from handling present. This is an exemplary example of an Ellis-Jennings Repeating M-1817 Common Rifle. Do not let this once in a lifetime opportunity pass you by.
