serial #BER183489Z, 9mm, 5" barrel with a bright excellent bore. The metal surfaces of this pistol retain 99% original factory dull blue and anodized finishes showing a couple of very light handling marks sparsely scattered about. The black checkered synthetic grips with Beretta logos remain in excellent condition. The pistol includes its original factory sleeve and blue plastic hard case, manual, cleaning brushes and two 15-round magazines. The magazines and major components bear proper military drawing numbers, "PB" in a circle sans serif on the left side slide, "PM" proof on right side slide and "U.S. 9mm M9" military designation. The story behind these pistols is an interesting one, in 1992 Lt. Col. (Res.) Mark Westrom of AMCOM Rock Island worked a deal with Beretta USA to provide a limited number of pistols for the U.S. Army Reserve Marksmanship Shooting Team. Due to U.S. Government regulations, no working firearms are deaccessioned (the only notable exception being M1 Garand rifles), therefore pistol team members could not legally obtain an actual U.S.-issued Beretta M9 pistol for practice and competition shooting. Beretta made available a total of 217 M9 pistols that were taken "off the line" from the government contract and given conventional civilian serial numbers with the "BER" prefix and "Z" suffix. Since the U.S. Government never took legal ownership of the pistols, no DOD regulations were violated, and the individual shooters could purchase the arms directly. It was eventually agreed between Beretta and the U.S. Army at Rock Island Arsenal that they would not have any future production of these pistols. Evidently the D.O.D. got wind of the deal and stopped any further "civilian" offerings, even though, technically these were not "civilians" purchasing the arms. These guns were the subject of a September 1996 American Rifleman article detailing their interesting history, a copy of which is included. With only 217 such pistols manufactured by Beretta, the chances of locating one on the secondary market are very slim and this is a very rare opportunity for the Beretta or military pistol collector to obtain an actual M9, as-issued government pistol. GUIDELINES FOR FIREARM PURCHASES • All Federal, State and Local firearms laws will be observed. FFL holders may take possession of any firearm on day of sale when they present a signed copy of their Federal Firearms License. New Hampshire residents over the age of 21 may take possession of any firearm on day of sale providing the proper paperwork is filled out and the transfer has been approved either through the NH State Police or the FBI NICS System. While most NICS and State approvals are immediate, approvals could take up to 3 days. Most non-residents may take possession of long guns on day of sale after completing the proper forms and successfully completing a NICS check; modern handguns will need to be shipped to an FFL holder in the buyer's home state. Buyer is responsible for any and all shipping charges and all items must be paid for on day of sale. Bidders should be familiar with their local and state laws as Amoskeag Auction Co., Inc. will not be responsible for any parties purchasing items which may not be possessed in, or shipped, to their state of residence.
