Item Details

The Danbury Mint "Metropolitan Cathedral" Danbury Mint METROPOLITAN CATHEDRAL - NIB "OF SPECIAL INTEREST TO HISTORIANS, EDUCATORS AND COLLECTORS" 's your chance to own a brand new limited-edition Danbury Mint collectible of the Metropolitan Cathedral, VTB-004 from the "Historic Catholic Churches Collection" . This superbly detailed porcelain sculpture depicts the Metropolitan Cathedral in Mexico City, Mexico. It measures approximately 10" x 10" x 5" and comes with a polished wooden stand for your displaying pleasure. The Catedral Metropolitana (Metropolitan Cathedral) is the largest cathedral in the Western Hemisp It is located on the city's Main Square, the Zocalo (officially Constitution Square) and is the oldest cathedral in the Americas. It was constructed in the Spanish Baroque style of architecture and includes a pair of 64-meter neoclassical towers which hold 18 bells. After the Spanish conquest of the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan, Hernando Cortez began the construction of a Catholic church. This church was demolished in or about 1573 and a new cathedral was built on the same place. A side chapel, the Sagrario Metropolitano (the parish church) constructed between 1749-68, is the greatest triumph of the Mexican Churrigueresque style. The new cathedral, built to look like those in Spain, was consecrated in 1667, but the final elements - bell towers and central dome - designed by the Spanish neoclassical architect Manuel Tolsa were not finished until 1813. This exquisite replica comes to you BRAND NEW in the original box and was only opened for inspection. This beautiful collectible has never been displayed since its purchase and is no longer available from the Danbury Mint! This piece is indeed an invaluable and rare find. This is definitely an heirloom in the making and would make a great addition to any collection.
