Award-winning comic writer and artist Bryan Talbot is credited as the man who created the first-ever British graphic novel, 'The Adventures of Luther Arkwright'. Throughout his career Bryan has pushed boundaries, challenged expectations, and won legions of admirers across the globe with works like 'One Bad Rat', 'Alice in Sunderland' and the COSTA Award-winning story 'Dotter of His Father's Eyes' (with Mary Talbot). He's also one of the patrons of the Lakes Festival, and so we are honoured that he has donated several of his rare original works for this auction. This piece is an extremely rare donation, and unlike anything normally made available to comic art collectors. It is the original ink on acetate outlines for a page from the award-winning 'One Bad Rat', plus the hand-painted watercolour backgrounds that fit behind the ink images to create the finished article. Hand-colouring like this is rarely done nowadays, so as well as being a rare contribution and a beautiful piece of art, this item is also a piece of history. The pictures show the ink on acetate layer, the watercolour layer, the two combined, and the final published version.
