ROBINSON / FROM HIS FRIENDS". Charles L. Robinson was born July 21, 1818 in Hardwick, Massachusetts. Robinson was the first Governor of Kansas. He was also the first governor to be impeached. He was not convicted or removed from office, but is the only governor of Kansas to be impeached in history. He was educated at Hadley and Amherst academies, and at Amherst College. He studied medicine in Woodstock, Vermont, and later in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, where he earned his medical degree at the Berkshire Medical College in 1843. He practiced medicine in Belchertown, Springfield, and Fitchburg. In 1849, he traveled to California where he edited a daily paper in Sacramento called the Settler's and Miner's Tribune in 1850, took an active part in the riots of 1850 as an upholder of squatter sovereignty and was seriously wounded. While under indictment for conspiracy and murder, he was elected to the California legislature. He was subsequently discharged by the court without trial and represented California's 12th State Assembly district from 1851 to 1852. In June 1854, he went to Kansas as confidential agent of the New England Emigrant Aid Society. During the Bleeding Kansas tragedy, he angered many with his passionate support for the Free-Staters, who were promoting a fight against pro-slavery advocates. He was illegally elected Territorial Governor of Kansas under the Topeka Constitution in January 1856. From the spring of 1856 until September, Robinson and several other Free-State leaders, including the son of abolitionist John Brown, were held in custody in Camp Sackett. In 1861, Robinson became governor of the newly admitted State of Kansas. His impeachment was due to a political rivalry with James H. Lane. Although he was found not guilty, it hurt his political career. He was elected to the Kansas State Senate and served from 1873 to 1881. He was Superintendent of the Haskell Institute from 1887 to 1889, and regent of the University of Kansas for twelve years. Charles L. Robinson died on August 17, 1894. He is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Lawrence, Douglas County, Kansas.
CONDITION: Very Good. Little if any of the finish remains on blued components. Case colors have largely faded. Moderate fading to cylinder scene. The brass is moderately worn, especially on the trigger guard. Moderate surface wear to grip panels. Some darkening and light erosion of the wood in the fit to the grip frame at the corners. Inscription is easily readable.
