.58 caliber, 10" octagon barrels with bright excellent smooth bores which show a spot or two of very light oxidation. The barrels are a mostly smooth mottled pewter gray and soft brown damascus pattern showing remnants of the lightest pinprick pitting. Each has a scant silver bead front sight on island and a flat-top u-notch rear at the tangs, the barrels maker-marked "H.W. Mortimer.London/Gunmaker To His Majesty". There are light engraved bands at the hooked breech, and the tangs as well show some nice foliate and geometric engraving. The stepped, rear-teated lockplates are a very pleasing tarnished pewter and case-hardened patina with bridled frizzens and rear-sliding safeties. They are maker-marked "H. W. Mortimer" just above the lightly chiseled frizzen springs. The swan-neck cocks are very graceful with a top flourish on each and the frizzen tails as well with a lovely recurving flourish. Hammers, frizzens and plates show light borderline engraving. There is a single ramrod thimble and tailpipe retaining each of the original horn-tipped mahogany ramrods. The triggerguards have chiseled urn finial front extensions with light floral engraving on the bows of the ribbed guards, showing some generous trace original blue, with a bit of pinprick pitting in the grasping areas of the long tangs. The English walnut stocks both rate very good plus to perhaps near excellent with much original varnish and the expected minor handling marks from the years, one arm with a drying crack through the figured grain at the forestock. The bag-shaped grips are slightly recurving and very nicely, coarsely checkered, with mullered front borders. The butts are each lightly incise carved with a simple floral motif and the edges remain crisp. The barrels are retained with captive, escutcheonless blued steel wedges. There is a very old, very well-done repair to a crack through the front wedge cut, toward the muzzle on one pistol, but it is extremely well done and difficult to detect. The locks function smartly and the sliding safeties function as-designed. The pistols ride in their original mahogany presentation case with green baize lining and makers label within the lid. Inside are the original steel mould, which rates excellent with a clean cavity; compartmented fixed common top powder flask rating very good with good lacquer and a very small ding in the body; mahogany starter with screw-off end and spare wiping end included; a rosewood handled dual blade turnscrew; bone "parts" or oil jar with screw-off lid; spare flints and a selection of cast projectiles. The case itself rates very good showing the expected chips, handling marks and light dings. There is a small spliced repair along its left edge and a few age cracks but overall the case is sound and honest and includes the key. Really a very fine pair of duelers from this top-quality maker, sure to be the focal point on the gun room table. (38294-8) {ANTIQUE
