The AMC AMX made its automotive debut on February 24th, 1968 and was designed by Richard Teague as a two-seat GT-style sports car. It was classified as a muscle car but was quite different from the normal muscle car of its time. With a slightly shorter wheelbase than the Corvette and a two-seat option, it was often seen by many as a direct Corvette competitor. The AMX was also the only steel bodied American-built two-seater of its time, and it was the first two-seat steel bodied car since the 1957 Ford Thunderbird. The AMX brought a lot of changes to the muscle car market, setting itself apart from many. Offered here is an amazingly clean example of one of the more unique American made muscle cars to hit the market. This AMX started its life being assembled at the Kenosha, Wisconsin plant on August 16th, 1968; the plant was later acquired by the Chrysler Corporation which consequently brought an end to the American Motors Corporation’s memorable and unique run. However, AMC was able to step out of the box and create cars that were unique and forward thinking and many people took note, all the while creating a cult-like following with a good majority of car enthusiasts. Though it had a strong following from some, it has long been an underdog in the muscle car market. The AMC AMX continues to gain more and more traction on its long overdue run as being considered one of the top runners of the classic muscle car era. For the last nine years, the owner of this early production 1968 AMX has carefully taken care of and documented this beautifully restored car. Before he acquired it in 2011, the previous owner had given it a rotisserie restoration and brought the exterior back to life by repainting it in the original paint code of 44A Caravelle Blue Metallic. It is still equipped with the original restored factory 390 4V V-8 engine, which was AMC’s most potent powerplant option of its time. With minor upgrades like a higher lift cam and modern-day components surrounding the engine, it is now able to throw down nearly 400 horsepower on the road. Backing the engine is the rare original four-speed manual transmission, which only 2,112 of the 6,725 AMXs were given that option from the factory. With this AMX being built in the early part of production, it was a part of the fleet that did not come with the factory standard head rests, and according to the owner’s records, this AMX was equipped with Javelin door panels from the factory because the AMXs door panels were not yet ready for the assembly line. With all the work performed to the interior and exterior of the car, it is only fitting that it was entered into a recognized car show. In 2013, this car was awarded the prestigious Junior trophy at the Auburn National AMC show. It scored an incredible 97 out of 100 points. With the Junior award already pinned to the car, the next time the new owner enters it in a competition the outcome will most likely be the highly coveted Senior award. The combination of the high-end award, level of originality, and restoration makes this 1968 AMX perhaps one of the finest examples on the market. Accompanying this aggressive muscle car is an abundance of items that add to the rarity and value of this high-performance muscle car. A stack of folders containing the original build order, owner’s manual, and parts receipts accompany the car, as well as a box full of the original ‘68 engine parts and the aforementioned 2013 Junior trophy award. Bidding. No bid may be retracted by Bidder/Buyer during the sale for any reason, regardless of whether bid is made in person, online, by telephone, or as an absentee bidder. All sales are final upon the Auctioneer’s declaration of sale.
Payment. Payment of the purchase price is due immediately upon the Auctioneer’s declaration of sale. Payments must be in the form of an acceptable credit card, Bank wire, certified funds, and cash. All cash payments will be reported according to U.S. Federal government requirements.
Personal or company checks are acceptable with prior approval from Worldwide Auctioneers. Approval requires an irrevocable letter of guarantee from the purchaser’s bank made to Worldwide Auctioneers, stating the auction name, sale dates, the limit of the bank’s guarantee, and a commitment not to issue stop payments with respect to checks made payable to Worldwide Auctioneers. (Sample of this letter is available. Please call our office.) Your check may be converted to an electronic file. Alternate payment arrangements are available for absentee and telephone bidders and must be made in advance. Please direct inquiries to sales office.
Final online bid price does not include 13% Buyer's Premium, or applicable taxes or fees. A 3% processing fee will be added to the total if paying by approved Credit Card. When registering a vehicle ownership, the Buyer is responsible for all federal, city, state, or other taxes due for which the Buyer does not qualify as exempt. Proof of exemption is Buyer’s responsibility. Payment for vehicle is to be immediate and made directly by the Buyer to Worldwide with Buyer agreeing to pay Worldwide Auctioneers sales commission as per sale agreement.
Non-Compliance of Buyer, Default and Remedies. If the Bidder/Buyer fails to comply with any of the Conditions of Sale, including, without limitation, a Bidder/Buyer fails to timely pay the full purchase price and/or remove a vehicle when required, the Bidder/Buyer shall be in breach and default of this agreement and shall be liable to Worldwide Auctioneers, and Bidder/Buyer agrees that Worldwide shall be entitled to recover from such Bidder/Buyer, any and all damages, costs, expenses, fees (including attorneys’ fees) and other amounts suffered and/or incurred. Worldwide may initiate legal action against the Bidder/Buyer including, without limitation, an action for specific performance, cancel or rescind the sale, resell the vehicle(s) with or without reserve privately or at public auction and the Bidder/Buyer shall be liable for any deficiency between the purchase price (plus all damages, costs, expenses and fees, including attorney’s fees incurred by Worldwide) and the resale price. Items not picked up within stated times without contacting Auction Company may be forfeited (including deposit) and or storage fee of $25.00 per day apply plus any towing or other storage fees.

Other Terms. Vehicles and/or memorabilia lots not marked as “Offered Without Reserve” are subject to a minimum bid set by the Seller. When a vehicle and/or memorabilia lot is sold subject to such a minimum bid, the auctioneer may bid on the Seller’s behalf in an amount not to exceed the Seller’s minimum bid. This instrument, together with the Online Bidder’s Registration Form, Clerk Ticket, Purchase Invoice and Bill of Sale, comprise the entire agreement of the parties and shall be binding on them and their respective heirs, personal representatives, and assigns. This instrument shall not be modified except in writing, signed by an officer of Worldwide Auctioneers in the auction office or at the auction block.
