Our Assessment: This DS Arms SA-58 FAL STG-58 Parts Build, chambered in .308 Winchester / 7.62x51mm NATO, is a well-built, semi-automatic variant of the legendary FN FAL battle rifle, constructed using a mix of Austrian STG-58 surplus parts and modern DS Arms components. The FAL platform, often referred to as the “Right Arm of the Free World”, is one of the most widely deployed and battle-proven rifles of the Cold War era, valued for its rugged design, reliable gas system, and powerful chambering. This rifle features a 21-inch barrel (22.5 inches with the muzzle device), providing excellent accuracy and effective ballistic performance, making it ideal for long-range shooting, military surplus collecting, and recreational range use. One of the standout features of this SA-58 FAL is its combination of surplus Austrian STG-58 components and DS Arms’ high-quality American-made receiver, which retains the durability and functionality of the original military-issue rifle. The rifle is fitted with a clamshell stamped metal handguard, a smooth polymer pistol grip, and a polymer dropped-comb stock with a hard rubber buttpad. While the bore shows moderate erosion and light pitting, the rifling remains well-defined, ensuring that this rifle is still capable of accurate shooting with the right ammunition and proper maintenance. The receiver retains most of its original finish, though the surplus components exhibit the expected wear from field use, adding to its Cold War-era aesthetic.
For military surplus collectors, FAL enthusiasts, and shooters who appreciate classic battle rifle designs, this DS Arms SA-58 FAL STG-58 build offers a historic and functional example of the legendary FAL platform. Its mix of original Austrian parts and modern DS Arms manufacturing makes it an authentic representation of the Cold War’s most famous battle rifle, while still maintaining strong shooting capabilities and reliability. Whether used as a range rifle, a collectible military firearm, or a piece of FAL history, this rifle is a fantastic addition to any collection of military-style semi-auto rifles, offering both practical performance and historical significance. -R.E.
