Offered for bidding is a Winchester 1886 rifle in big .40-65 caliber, manufactured c.1890s. This is a very fine condition octagon barrel rifle in one of the more scarce and desirable caliber's chambered for this model. This particular rifle shows that it was probably returned to the Winchester factory for alterations. It now sports a 21 inch octagon barrel and full magazine making it a perfect saddle rifle. It is important to note that the magazine retaining band is located in exactly the proper location from the muzzle. This is important because almost all shortened Winchesters that were done outside the factory have the magazine retaining band located in the wrong location. At the time of this alteration from standard rifle to rare “Short Rifle,” the lower tang was probably also replaced as it lacks the usual Winchester markings. The barrel, magazine and forend cap show a very deep high polish blue and the wood is in excellent condition showing no signs of cleaning or sanding. The stock and forend are without chips or cracks. This rifle exhibits exceptionally tight wood to metal fit, shows almost no handling or storage marks and retains the early style heavy steel crescent butt plate. The screws are also in exceptional condition with most indicating that they have not been turned or removed- very unusual! The barrel and magazine are smooth and show sharp original early style Winchester and caliber markings. Markings on the upper tang are sharp and correct showing “MODEL 1886” etc. clear stampings. The receiver is naturally aged to a mottled gray with fine blue on the loading gate and also shows no signs of rust or abuse. The action and mechanics are tight and crisp and the bore IS IN BRIGHT MINT CONDITION! The barrel retains original buckhorn rear sight with a small bone blade front sight. Most of these big caliber Winchesters were western shipped and used. They also typically saw hard frontier service. This unusual short rifle has survived in outstanding condition. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
