High Estimate6000
Low Estimate4000
No. 34 of 200, .50 cal., 43” swamped Bob Paris barrel with a bright excellent bore. Barrel and Siler lockplate retain all of their deep plum brown original maker finish. There is a nice German silver blade front sight with flat top v-notch rear and the top flat is signed in script “J Haugh”. Brass furniture includes nosecap, three faceted thimbles, tailpipe, faceted dual dovetailed guard and wide early faceted buttplate. There is no toeplate but the arm features a slightly engraved geometric sideplate and simple patchbox with urn or tombstone head and engraved square lid; release is in heel of butt. The rifle is stocked in a lovely grade of Pennsylvania curly maple by Haugh, these rifles were made by both Haugh and John Bivens, (with assistance from Mark Silver and Monte Mandarino who assisted Bivens in North Carolina). There is a full-length rib beneath the ramrod with light flourish island carving behind the tailpipe. Each stock flat is raised as well with dropper points at rear and a fleur-de-lis island to the rear of the tang. There is a lovely flourish of scroll with floral head at the rear of the wrist to the right of the point of comb and the left side of the stock has a nice grooved flat bottomed cheekpiece, flanked front and rear by exquisite carved open flowing scroll with decoration on the underside of the cheekpiece as well. Siler lock has bridled frizzen with faceted pan and there is a fancy single trigger with a rearward curlicue tip. The interior of the patchbox has the “Pennsylvania Bicentennial Commemorative Longrifle” plaque with the Pennsylvania Bicentennial seal and the rifle’s serial number “34”. An excerpt from the Indiana Evening Gazette, April 14, 1976 regarding the construction of these rifles states: “...components go to John Bivins of Winston-Salem NC and Jack Haugh of Friendship Indiana to be turned into completed rifles. Nearly 100 hours of hand work goes into the final assembly and finishing of each long rifle. Currently each gunsmith is working from 70 to 80 hours per week to meet the production goal of six rifles per month”. An exquisite engraved powderhorn, numbered to the rifle, was included with each gun, made by Tom White of Worthington Ohio. It features a semi-bulbous walnut plug with an extension lobe and is reduced near the nozzle in a scalloped pattern with dual medial rings as hanger provision, the spout nonagonally faceted. Prominently featured on the horn is the seal of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with its state motto and it is numbered 34 of 200. A map of the eastern counties of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is engraved on the periphery of the horn. Very ironically, these two hundred rifles caused a court case in which the IRS decided that an 11% excise tax was due on each rifle, a rule never before applied to custom gun makers who create hand-made rifles, certainly not of the antique blackpowder genre. Later court cases, and finally legislation exempted the rifles and overturned the ruling. The original patch worm and cleaning jag are included in the patchbox compartment. We have never seen another of these rifles offered for sale on the secondary market, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own two incredible works of art, created by men at the top of their crafts.
