.54 caliber. 36" wedge retained octagon to round barrel with under rib. SN: NSN.  Browned finish, brass furniture, walnut half-stock with raised cheek rest. Single shot muzzleloading flintlock US military rifle. 5.25" flat beveled flint lock in original flint configuration with rounded and fenced iron pan and flat beveled reinforced cock. Lock marked with a {SPREAD-WINGED EAGLE} with "US" in a shield in its breast forward of the cock and in three vertical lines to the rear "HARPERS / FERRY / 1819". Barrel with raised "US" and "{Eagle Head} / P" proofs in sunken ovals on the left angled breech flat. Outline of illegible cartouche on counterpane. Two-piece brass patchbox with release in top of buttplate. Period pick and brush set inside patchbox with coiled brass spring style links, brush and copper vent pick. Fixed notch rear sight, dovetailed brass blade front sight. Not equipped with sling swivels or to accept a bayonet. Retains an original, full-length trumpet head ramrod with good threads at the end. The original Model 1803 Rifle was produced at harpers Ferry from 1804-1807 with a 33" barrel and a total production of 4,013. In 1814 production was resumed and a new 36" barrel length was adopted, although it did not become standard until the supplies of the shorter barrels were used up. Between 1814 and 1820 an additional 15,707 rifles were produced, the majority with the new 36" barrel, including 4 sample rifles produced in 1813 for the use of Springfield Arsenal as patterns. A total of 3,324 were produced in 1819. The Model 1803 Rifle was unique in that it was the first official US military rifle to produced at a National Armory and not a rifle acquired from contractors outside the US arsenal system. These rifles saw substantial use during the first half of the 19th century with many having a second life as percussion altered arms. Finding an original flint US Model 1803 Rifle with a strongly rifled bore is rare indeed these days and this is a very nice example worthy of being added to any advanced collection of early American martial arms. CONDITION: Very good. Metal with a pleasing, moderately oxidized brown patina that may include some old brown finish as well. Although Moller notes that all Type II 1803 Rifles were finished in the bright, this rifle appears to have been originally browned and seems to retain thinned traces of the finish mixed with a lovely untouched brown patina. Breech with moderate pitting and touchhole shows moderate erosion. Markings remain clear in the metal, weak in the wood. Mechanically functional, bore very good with strong rifling consisting of 7 narrow grooves. Bore with a moderate amount of scattered oxidation and some scattered pitting. Stock very good, relatively crisp with good lines and edges. Wood with scattered bumps, dings and mars but no real indication of sanding, and showing a couple of small, minor surface chips. PURCHASE PRICE AND PAYMENT. The 'Purchase Price'; for each lot shall equal the hammer price, buyer's premium, sales tax and, if applicable, all packing, handling, insurance and shipping costs. Buyers will be invoiced by email within 5 days after the close of the auction and must pay the full Purchase Price within 14 days after the date of the auction. No property will be released by Cowan's unless the Purchase Price has been paid in full and payment has cleared.
Payments can be made with cash, personal or traveler's check, credit card or wire transfers. Bidders from outside the continental United States are required to pay via wire transfer unless previously known to Cowan's.
PLEASE NOTE: A surcharge of 3% will be assessed to all credit card transactions. This surcharge is not greater than our cost of acceptance.
Institutional billing may be available, and should be arranged prior to the auction.
Cowan's may impose late charges of 1.5% per month (or the highest interest rate allowed) on any amount owed to Cowan's that remains unpaid after 30 days. Buyer shall be liable for any collection costs or attorney's fees incurred by Cowan's to collect payment, to the extent permitted by law.

FEDERAL FIREARMS LICENSE HANDLING POLICY
All firearms not identified as antique will require compliance with federal and state regulations pertaining to the sale and transfer of modern firearms, as noted with asterisks in our printed and online catalogues. It is the sole responsibility of the buyer to know and comply with all state firearms regulations. Unless specified below, all transfers of modern handguns must take place at Cowans, LLC. There will be no exception made to these rules and regulations.
All firearms not identified as antique, will require compliance with the following agencies, as noted with asterisks in our printed and online catalogues. There will be no exception to these rules and regulations.

1. HAND GUNS: Non-Ohio resident buyers of handguns must first pay for their purchases before leaving the auction. All modern hand guns must be retained by an agent. All buyers must make arrangements with a local firearms dealer in their resident state to provide Cowan’s a copy of the FFL license holder to whom any modern handgun will be shipped. Upon receipt of the copy of this license, a purchase will be packaged and shipped (at the buyer’s expense) to the appropriate FFL holder. This is a federal law and must be complied with regardless of a buyer’s resident state. Please allow up to four weeks for delivery.
Ohio residents may take possession of a modern handgun immediately after their purchase, provided they successfully complete a NICS background check which can occur on the auction premises or afterwards. Such transfer shall be made by Cowan’s.
2. MODERN LONG GUNS: Both residents and non-residents may take possession of modern long arms by first paying, then filing an ATF form 4473 and completing the NICS background check.

3. ANTIQUE GUNS: May be purchased and removed from the auction premises on the day of sale by anyone, resident or non-resident. Antique firearms are defined as 1898 and prior production.

The three forms necessary to fill out upon purchase of machine guns will be supplied by Cowan’s Auctions. These forms are: 1) ATF Form #4 (and possibly ATF Form #5) 2) Fingerprint Card, and 3) ATF form 5330.20 Certificate of Compliance.
