Overview of American Made British Style Short Land Pattern Flintlock Musket

Item Details

".76 caliber. 40"" pinned round barrel. SN: NSN. Bright finish, brass furniture, walnut stock. Single shot smoothbore muzzleloading flintlock musket. Unmarked banana shaped lock is of the pre-1777 style with a single sear screw visible behind the swan neck cock. Lock measures 6.5"" in overall length with pronounced teat at the rear, an integral and fenced unbridled iron pan and a trefoil finial on the steel spring. Interior of lock marked with a pair of punch dots. Lock in original flint with a modern cast replacement mainspring. Steel (frizzen) with a crude refacing that is likely period. Barrel without external proof marks, suggesting possible American or Continental origin, but not English manufacture. Barrel marked with an engraved rack number that reads J54, although the ""J"" could be a ""T"". The gun differs from conventional British-made ""Short Land"" pattern muskets in that the barrel measures 40"" rather than 42"". Additionally the palm swell at the entry pipe is significantly smaller, and there are four ramrod thimbles and an entry pipe making a total of five instead of four. The brass furniture is also cruder than typical British work with the stepped buttplate tang simpler than the English-made ones typical of a Short Land Pattern Board of Ordnance musket, a Wilson and those by other contractors. The side plate and triggerguard are also more roughly made than comparable British ones. The nose cap is a simple piece of sheet brass rather than a cast piece, a feature typical of the earliest of the British Long Land muskets but which was abandoned by the British long before the adoption of the Short Land Pattern guns. The gun is equipped with a brass acorn shaped wrist escutcheon that is unmarked. A sling swivel is present at the front of the tiggerguard bow, but the upper swivel is missing. A lug for a socket bayonet is located on top of the barrel 1.125"" from the muzzle. A button head iron ramrod is secured by the pipes. It is roughly 38"" in length and about 2"" short of full length for this gun. It shows good age and could be from the period of use. This musket is most likely of American origin and was probably assembled from available parts that included some recycled parts as well as newly made ones. The lock may be of Dutch origin and the barrel may be Continental. However the overall appearance, fit, finish and quality of workmanship is typical of American work in the fourth quarter of the 18th century. Whether this gun was made prior to hostilities as a ""Committee of Safety"" musket, during the American Revolution in one of the many Philadelphia area manufactories or assembled as a post-war militia musket circa 1790 is almost impossible to establish. It is worth noting that the rack marking on the barrel is quite similar to known examples found on City of New York marked muskets from the period of the Revolution. A well used, yet well preserved example of an apparent American rendering of a ""Brown Bess"" that could as easily be Revolutionary War period as Federal Period. Good. Fair bore with heavy oxidation, dark and rusted. Metal with a thickly oxidized brown patina with moderate amounts of light surface roughness. Unmarked with the exception of the engraved rack number on the barrel. Mechanically functional lock. Brass with a rich golden patina with greenish tones. Stock with moderate wear, some chipped wood loss around the pins, in particular on the reverse at the tip where a nominal 1"" long by .3"" wide chip is missing. There is moderate wear and chipping around the lock mortise with some old added square nails to support the lock under the tail. Forend with some chipped and minor splintered loss along the upper edge and a couple of repaired cracks, the most notable being on the obverse running diagonally from the entry pipe to the barrel channel for about 5.5"". There is also a tiny crack at the rear lock screw and some minor chipping in that area as well. Otherwise the wood shows scattered bumps, dings and mars.
