Item Details
According to Colt Archives Serial Number Database, this "Pocket Model of 1849" was produced in 1853. MARKINGS - "ADDRESS SAML COLT/ NEW YORK CITY" on the top of the barrel, "COLTS PATENT" on the right side of the frame and Stagecoach Scene roll engraved on the cylinder. SPECS: This gun sports a 5-round cylinder, 4" octagon barrel, brass trigger guard/ straps and smooth walnut grips. This gun is visible numbers matching. CONDITION: This gun is showing age and has lost all original bluing, but still retains a clean bore and appears to be in good working order. HISTORY: The Model 1849 Pocket Pistol, introduced in 1848 and remaining in production until 1872, was one of Colt’s most popular firearms. It was a smaller brother of the more famous "Colt's Revolving Belt Pistol of Naval Caliber" introduced the same year and commonly designated by collectors as the "1851 Navy Model". Colt 31 caliber Pocket Revolvers were widely used by both sides during the U.S. Civil War, especially among officers. One legend has it that the pocket models were popular with Civil War officers who did not rely on them as combat arms but as defense against battlefield surgeons bent on amputating a limb; a more likely reason is that officers were not expected to directly engage in combat, except in self-defense, and the small size and light weight of the Pocket models made carrying them around more attractive than larger, heavier models. Anecdotal accounts indicate that Bloody Bill Anderson, the Civil War raider, preferred the Pocket Model, and Bill Hickock was believed to have carried one as a backup pistol.
